Indeed... out here, I'm photographing bears mainly in some hayfields - not unheard of to see six within twenty minutes. They're all interested in the dandelions popping up, and in the last three years of me visiting and shooting them several times a week, I've only seen one display of aggression - and that was a mother that I walked upon her cubs in the forest, by surprise, I don't recall if I even had my camera with me. But I always carry bear spray, and respect them, giving them their room - resisting the urge to get closer is often a challenge
Do you wear a bear bell (aka a cowbell)? When traipsing about the trails and paths on Vancouver Island it was a habit, but it does mean you don't see much wild life. Good way to keep the dog out of trouble too.

Lovely images.

Nice catch. Looks like some Tringa species.
Please try Merlin bird app in mobile. Share photo to it and it identifies quite well.

Absolutely not! Those things are hideous and annoying, driving me crazy whenever I encounter someone wearing one...
(the bear can hear you without the bells anyways, especially if you're in a group - most people don't walk very quietly)

And about the dog? Her job, as a livestock guardian dog, is to chase the bears away!

Tele lens are great choices for isolating the subject.

Not a bad idea to take the camera with you to lunch.

The bird in the second shot looks like a grebe. Not sure which species.

Looks to me like a Ruff - small head, short bill, yellow legs, unusual colouring. The colour varies - I saw a white one at a distance last time I was in UK and was trying to figure out what kind of gull it was.

A few notables at the park today. This Green Heron caught and swallowed down a fish (pumpkinseed I think) right in front of us.

Also a good view of a Blue-winged Teal:

After taking the Teal shots I checked my email and found that my new K-3 III had arrived and was waiting for pickup. I restrained myself and we checked out the Grebe raft before calling at the camera store on the way home. The grebes (which now have three eggs) were having some trouble with an unusually strong wind out of the north.

The conditions for all of these shots were a bit marginal in terms of low light and / or distance, and I 'm hoping the new camera will give me a bit more latitude.

Thank you! The arcane knowledge of horticulture is a mystery to me, also, but I believe they are pear blossoms.
