Busy place you got there. I guess you don't get anything done then.

The lens is a Zeiss 500mm f8 Mirotar, CY mount via adapter on an MFT camera. It it impressively well made, tiny and lightweight and by virtually all reviews and comments I've seen, has the best IQ of any mirror lens. I thought it would be useful when traveling, as it is smaller & lighter than, for example, my Olympus 300mm f4 which, with the Oly 1.4X TC attached, gives 420mm actual, the equivalent of a 840mm FOV on a FF camera against the Mirotar's 1000mm equivalent FOV. But, the IQ of the Mirotar is simply not adequate. A crop of an image taken with the 300mm f4 even without the TC attached is hands-down significantly superior. I'll try to sell the Mirotar or trade it in at a loss. It's a lens that has always interested and attracted me. Now I've had one, it's wonderful to hold to admire the good-as-it-gets craftsmanship, but it does not deliver the goods.
Thankls for answering. I find it quite unbelievable that this should happen with a Zeiss lens, as others have noted. I would be very carefull if you decide to collimate it yourself. There's a fair bit of craftsmanship involved in that as well. Overall I'm sorry to read that you don't like it.

I know what you mean, Rod. My excuse (seconded by SWMBO) is the new hot water tank the insurance company insisted on ...

Both with K-50 and A 400, in the hawk shot there - shooting into the light - you can definitely see the purple fringing limitations of a near 40 yr old design, but it still cleans up decently in post.
I missed that lens today. We were repairing a foundation wall this morning, built the forms yesterday, so good and tired at walk time. It sure would have been nice to have a nice light 400. I missed a Yellow Bellied Sap sucker because I didn't have it. You don't know what you're got until it's gone.

Question for sigma 500mm/f4.5 apo ex dg owners

Hey Folks, those out there with the Sigma 500mm/F4.5 APO EX DG , I have just recieved a "MINT" condition lens from a seller in Japan, and have a question with regard to the focus collar, when you pull it backwards and forwards between Manual and AF does your focus collar click up into the AF position with an audible and tactile "Click" ???

I have the Sigma 300mm/F2.8 APO EX DG, and it's focus collar does have a nice click and it hold s it nicely in AF, but this new lens does not click up in that position, and I have found myself, accidentally knocking the collar backwards into manual focus.

Any one able to confirm the action on their copy of the 500mm would be appreciated

@Weevil @Ducatigaz @kengoh

Many Thanks cmohr

Mhm - it's a great lens to have in the arsenal! Nice and light to handhold everywhere, certainly sharp enough, and manual focus isn't that big of a deal when you get used to it. Thanks for selling it to me
