That's lovely, especially with the flower that shines through the feathers. Is this all natural light of did you also use a flash?

Thanks for the kind words. I should have explained this shot. The orange honeysuckle vines are natural to the area and I've always wanted to take pictures of a hummingbird off a real flower as opposed to hovering just off the feeder. I used two off camera flashes set up around the vine and allowed the flashes to do most of the work, with a shutter speed of 1/160 at f/16. The flashes were in manual mode at 1/16 (Godox V860ii and trigger). Since I don't have a backdrop to hang and illuminate with a third flash as one would do with a real multi-flash hummingbird setup, I had to adjust the shutter speed and ISO to get the background to illuminate with some ambient light, but not so much that I'd get too much ghosting. The background is a bit dark, but this was the best compromise I could get under the circumstances.

Here's another attempt, this time of a visiting black-chinned hummingbird.

A few more shots from my puddle. K-3iii in 1.3 crop mode. K-3iii/FA*600mm F4 ED[IF]/RRS BH-55/Kirk window mount.

I finally got round to AF fine adjusting my Sigma 800mm F5.6 APO EX to my K-3ii/RRS BH-55/Kirk window mount.

Great, many thanks for the explanation and the technical effort that went into this. I don't mind the dark background at all.

That's another great series, Gary. I too like the reflections a lot. Didn't know you have your own puddle, but it is a good one ;-)

I fill it every day from a jerry can, so I'm claiming it as mine.

I went on a trip into a forest area close by a few days ago to test my new Adaptall-2 adapter for the Tamron 400/4 with aperture control. It was amazingly quiet in there, you wouldn't know the city was only a kilometer away....however, also many mosquitos.
You couldn't stand still for more than five seconds before getting bitten. No wonder I only encountered runners - anybody who was slower didn't make it

Sadly I couldn't see any birds in there, only hear them somewhere above in the trees.

Which led to some experimentation. Under the right circumstances, the 400/4 can be used for some great background separation of more than just animals.

Here I added film grain on purpose in post, without the image somehow seemed unpleasant to the eye. Maybe there's such a thing as uncanny valley for the state between blurry and sharp, like when the bokeh of a lens looks "too busy"?

I encountered a deer, which was probably as surprised by it seeing me as me seeing it. Taken with Sigma DL 70-300mm at 300/5.6 wide open, manually focussed. Sadly it bolted before I could change to my larger lens, I really should get a dedicated holster for the Tamron, but it's hard to find one due to its size.
Then again, it's probably good instinct that caused it to flee once it saw a human lifting a large, heavy object with a lens pointing straight at it....
