a tripod can help in lack of sharpness, and also with color rendition, not because of anything other than the fact that you are likely seeing Longitudinal CA in the out of focus areas show up as color shift. fringing is an extreme case of longitudinal CA and also due to high backlighting, depending on the shot it can be doscontinuousthis can be due to too slow a shutter speed or the reaction of the shake reduction with irregular panning of the subject see my comment above about longitudinal CA

If you are using a 400 for the first time (especially if you did not shoot tele’s previously) the learning curve can be a little steep. Blurr and shake offer whole new dimensions at 400 mm. So does precision of focus and aperture /DOF
I will try once more and try to up the iso and increase shutter speed to see if that helps. I didn't think things were back lit. I was photographing late afternoon west across the Mississippi, and a few north.

Like many of us, I use my DA*300 to shoot bees, butterflies and flowers as well as birds. It makes a handy dandy portrait lens for dogs as well. I photograph strangers dogs at Champion’s Park and get the owners email address and send them pictures. If I have my DA* 50-135 equipped and crouch down to dog level, the little critter tends to approach and get inside the optimum range. With the 300 I can often stay outside the dogs curiosity zone. This particular little Yorkie’s owner loved the picture so much she brought me a home cooked meal.

What a beautiful moon from last night, but it is very sad that its color is result of the wildfires.

Two moon shots from tonight.
SMC 645 A* 600mm on 645D and same with 2x converter A.
Cropped to approx same size; which is "best" ? Recognizing I may have missed focus a little on either- but are pretty similar- I think.
Atmosphere is not ideal, humidity is 75%.

Thanks for the input.
One vote for the 1st and another for the 2nd. I should have made it a poll.

1st is the 600mm* with 2x, Iso 800 and wide open.
2nd is the 600mm*, Iso 400 and F9 ; which may account for some of the difference in sharpness ?

If the weather co-operates tonight, I plan to use my son's 645Z for the "same" shots. Another comparison to ponder.

The first seems to show a bit more detail of the mares.

That's a ripper - maybe worth two meals?

I'd say the second image is just slightly more crisp, showing more detail.

A perfect mismatch family that I always wanted to capture it naturally. Last week, I finally recorded it down on my camera. A Banded Bay Cuckoo being fed by it's foster parent, a male Common Iora. Totally a perfect mismatch with one species feeding another totally non-related species.
Look at the mouth of the juvenile cuckoo, looks really scary with a mouth big enough to swallow its parent whole
