It isn't too hard to get better focus using a focusing aid as it becomes very clear when you have nailed the focus instead of trying to guess.

The slender American Kestrel is roughly the size and shape of a Mourning Dove, although it has a larger head; longer, narrow wings; and long, square-tipped tail. In flight, the wings are often bent and the wingtips swept back.

finally decided to focus on the " evergreen " section and hold focus as I moved aiming point onto the bird
