Which prime?

I use an old manual focus Nikon 500mm F4 with a cheapo glassless PK adaptor, it was about 400 bucks for a battered example. It doesn't focus to infinity on my Pentax but I don't need it to. There's also the TC-301 Leitax'd 2x converter for it if I want a 1000mm F8 with infinite focus!

As well as that I have an F*300 which admittedly was a little more expensive but it has autofocus

They might not be cheap-cheap and I could be probably better served with a zoom, but they're what I have and enjoy rolling around in the mud taking photos of farm animals with them

Aha yes, there are many good film-era manual focus longer primes at more affordable prices, great tools - especially good for learning and applying the fundamentals of long lens photography.

That stuff's overrated.... one of the many reasons I upgraded to a "modern" lens but I still find myself using manual focus more often than not

Nice. All of my long telephotos are film-era manual focus.

What's your maximum focus distance with the Nikon 500/4? I almost never shoot at infinity.

Good question... I'm not good at guesstimating distances but at maximum distance I can't quite fit a regular sized horse into the frame. In this case it helps that these long lenses focus well past infinity.

Unlike Lowell's Long - Eared, this Northern Hawk Owl likes to be out in the open, preferably at the top of a dead spruce tree in a boreal forest swamp.
Taken hand-held from about 100m, a major crop, pushing the K3 III, DA*300mm and 1.4x TC to their limits.

A brown hyena and cub on a windy day on the Skeleton Coast in Namibia. These are very reclusive animals seldom seen in daylight. The atmospherics and wind made it difficult to get it sharp with 300MM DA* and 1.4 TC,. but it does show the bleak landscape where they survive

And even from that distance it has spotted you!

I think that the atmospheric blur only adds to the scene to convey the harsh circumstances these animals endure and still the image is sharp enough to allow the viewer to identify the animal and scene. Nice capture.

Black swan portrait, Pentax K20D + 55~300mm (1st version) @ 300mm. So many times so many have remarked that the 55~300mm is better than it has any right being for the size, being a zoom, and the price.

A couple of images taken with the M300/4 on my K-50. I'd like to be closer, but that just didn't work with the ditches.
