Beautiful! It must have been quite something to see a raptor so close! I visited your part of Quebec in 1994 and saw a covered bridge for the first time. It was autumn though.

First birding with my Sigma 170-500. I've never been one. (and demonstrably am still not)

I had meant to directly compare it with the *300 and 1.4 TC but I'll make that another weekend. I suspect the latter will give better results but this one is doing better than I had anticipated. Despite it being a long lens these are fairly heavy crops

Already better than anything I got with the 170-500. (Mine was the non-DG version: Sigma 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database)

I shot thru the window with the FA400... 1st Image was cropped on the sides only to make it portrait orientation (Image was too centered to my tase let's say, so I thought it would be better in portrait). the 2nd also cropped to the right, to fill the frame (that one I'd have liked to have if centered )
Interesting you cam here in Quebec, do you remember in which town was the covered bridge ? we have many in our province... Was that near a town called Bedford ?

I think you did very well under the circumstances! I'm not sure if the covered bridge was near Bedford. Sorry. As I recall, the family that I visited lived south of Saint-Jean sur Richelieu, but I can't remember exactly where. I may have a photo still, but I'm not sure where exactly; it's not one of the photos from that trip which I've scanned. The only photos from Canada I have scanned at the moment are one of the glass floor in the CN tower, an autumn tree at the Upper Canada Village, an autumn forest and the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec.

In the river today...

Two mute swans up behind dam, water half covered in ice. Pic of one (orange bill). Three Trumpeter Swans (black bill) about one quarter mile up river with a group of Common Goldeneyes. Shots are of a male as he popped up from a dive. Water drops on his tail feathers and fine snow in the air. 19 degree F. Not the best of conditions. K3iii with D FA 150-450 at or near 450mm. Forgot to put SD card back in slot one so only got jpgs on card in slot 2, no raw, oops.

I think of Goldeneye ducks as the inverse of a football player, with a bright white spot below its eye instead of a black streak.
