Creeper, frustratingly busy little birds to photograph, Hop-hop-hop as soon as you get one framed, then scoot around to the back side of the tree trunk. I've tried several times to photograph a tree creeper here in New England, never yet with success.

Not unlike squirrels in that regard I think focal length and distance helped me a lot here, and that they are perhaps kind of used to humans walking by (was taken right next to a rather popular way). And even at ~750mm (FF eq) those are still cropped to a 1/6th or so... And let's not mention my keeper rate that day...

That's another point I should have mentioned about the difficulty of getting such good images of a creeper - - they are really tiny little birds, a far cry from photographing a great blue heron.

I took this shot back in 2016. K-3 + FA*300mm f4.5. The light was very poor - well into twilight. Even at 1/50th sec, f5 and 6400 ISO it was still heavily underexposed (1.5 or 2 stops or so). So really more like 18000 ISO plus. Which is very high for the K-3. I shot RAW + jpg; here is the SOOC jpg:

I have recently reprocessed the RAW file with DxO's PL5 and its DeepPrime noise reduction, which uses AI. I pushed the DeepPrime slider a long way. It did very well, without obvious artifacts and with minimal loss of detail. Finished it in Nik Color Efex.

Still suffers from the slow shutter but pretty amazing outcome in the circumstances. We are seeing some game-changing improvements in NR software lately.

It’s amazing how hard it is to explain the concept that not all birds are great blue herons when you start discussing wild life lenses.

It comes back to my old formula

Image Size = Subject Size x Focal Length / Distance

If you are shooting something 1/10th the size you have 2 options. Get a lens 10 times longer at hundreds of times the price, or move 10 times closer.

From an overnight trip to Long Point on Lake Erie

Lots of Sandhill Cranes - constant background calling, but not many close up.

The few remaining Tundra Swans kept their distance so no shots here.

Bald Eagle

And some smaller ones:

American Tree Sparrow

Song Sparrow, likely a recent arrival

Ion bridge railing sunken in water - now frozen. Too much rain here in last time ...

The Sigma 500 F4.5 is not known for a nice bokeh, but sometimes :-)

Bum shot of F-16 at Singapore Airshow 2022 practice.

Managed only a few barely passable shots.
Weather was lousy as well, even at its best.
