In a suburban cricket grand final, a batsman thrashes the ball through the off side in the victory against the cricket team I used to captain.
It was all a bit hard to watch, but that's sport - you both win and lose. It was a warm day, so consoling beers were consumed afterwards.

Our Yew gets bigger and our squarrels more athletic - there's no longer a spot that's beyond leaping distance. Had to get a squirrel-proof feeder this year and it doesn't attract as many birds.

Lots of action on the water at Sam Smith yesterday:

Eight Horned (Slavonian) Grebes all told in this flock - the most I've seen at one time.

New wooden nesting rafts have been put out but the only Red-necked Grebe nest at present is a natural one, quite close to the trail.

Most of the Long-tailed Duck have headed back to the Arctic now but this one is still hanging around, moving into its summer colours.

Yes! I have a couple of squirrel proof feeders*, and they eat what's left on the ground...
The old generation know it doesn't worth trying direct access to the feeder, but this young one do not...

You should try these feeders... these are the best

I have Brome sunflower and peanut feeders - they are good and well made but not as much space for the birds to show themselves as the regular ones. I've given up on putting out suet. It was disappointing this winter - no redpolls or siskins on the nyjer seed, our usual flock of Godfinches was absent, and a lot of House Sparrows and House Finches. Some relief from occasional woodpeckers and nuthatches.

I find shooting suburban cricket very interesting. You get into a rhythm with exactly when to hit the shutter release to get the best timing of ball coming off bat. Given the tiny fractions of a second involved, I am surprised how easy it is to nail it, even with the faster bowlers. Some of my favourite shots though are when you can see the reaction on the face of the wicketkeeper standing up to a spinner.

OK, one classic and one mini on the way. I thought about the nut feeder but I'll try these two first.

Yeah, I think the key to all sports is to understand them. Predicting what's about to happen is all important, so the more we understand the sport, the better our pics will be.

And yes, wicketkeepers are great for their expressions, as are bowlers after a wicket or beating the bat.
