Hummer taking advantage of the free lunch. Sadly the light angle wasn't right too get color from the throat feathers. Pany GX8 + Oly 300mm f4. A strobe might have brought out the color on his throat at the price of a blacker background

Wow. What length of exposure and fancy tracking equipment did you use to get this crisp shot?

This time I should have about 3600mm at the K3-III - the planet is quite far away. But I must admit that the fourth converter did not bring better IQ compared to digital enlargement.
That looks similar to my results with Saturn with the A* 400/2.8 and 2X-L so only 800mm. This is what I managed with Saturn last year after getting the 2X-L converter:

Adult Kingfisher trying to scare off a juvenile, it also tried to drown it a one point. K3iii/Sigma 800mm F5.6 APO EX/Gitzo 5532LS. It was almost impossible to get both birds in focus given their position.

Stand off.

Daylight Moon.

Excellent! That Tammy 400/4 is a very good lens, and you did fantastic work with it!

Many have bemoaned the fact that Tamron never used the same optical formula to make some AF versions of the lens. It had internal focusing that was light to the touch, so focusing should not be a strain on the AF motor of a camera body. I sometimes used mine with a 1.4X-L TC with fine results, but only acceptable with the 2X-L converter. Pretty much all of the 2X converters for which I've seen a review degrade the IQ an easily seen amount.

Nice shots Steve

It was good to see you at the lake on Sunday. Since you mentioned you have not seen much from me, I thought I would post a couple.

All shot with the K1 MKII and SMC 300/4 with 1.7x AFA from my kayak, hand held

Thanks Lowell - we missed the Turnstones that you had seen so couldn't post those! You get great things out of that lens - the Killdeer looks especially good. A kayak or canoe is a great photography platform but I do worry about tipping, or stumbling when boarding with all that gear! I now have a Pelican box for my GR3 but nothing big enough for a DSLR.

Thanks, What is amazing is that the birds are almost oblivious to us in the kayak. I have some heron and egret shots where I only got half the bird in the frame

We’ve had the boats for years now, but had been too busy to really get them out this year. Today was the first time.

Too bad you missed the turnstones.

I’ve added a couple more

I have a collection of shots with this lens and adaptor here. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/members/1116-lowell-goudge/albums/14355-...7x-af-adaptor/

Even in a canoe I can never get close to a Belted Kingfisher - still waiting to get a shot like that.
Some shots from this morning at my new favourite shorebird spot. They change from week to week and from year to year.
