You do create lovely shots with that combo Great shot
Thanks. I've found that the combo (i.e., the DA* 300 + DA 1.4x converter) is best within 10 to 30 feet and then it helps to limit cropping to no more than 50%. Using fill flash to keep ISO down also helps.

Spent the last week up in the Gawler Ranges in South Australia.

Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby (K3III and DFA 150-450)

and then one can play chasing the budgies! These guys are super fast through the gulleys.... twisting and turning..... the K3III (focus tracking) had potential but I didn't put much effort in.

That is a great spot and capture, in a perfect pose (on a rock!).

Cool pic.

That will happen when the Lachlan, Murrumbidgee and Darling Rivers all empty into the Murray!!!
There is a LOT of water heading towards Goolwa and surrounds.
There will be a few wet feet in SA then.

Thanks.... took a few days to find a group.... lot's of vegetation from the last year or so of rains.... so they can be quite invisible... but once generally located they don't move far .... I got a bit slack just walking with my F*300.... but next evening went back with the 150-450.

It was weid weather for November up there..... windy, wet..... and sort of a bit cool..... I took the van so biggest worry was getting out if the roads were to wet.... but we seemed to only get 10mm of rain a couple of times whilst 40km south they had 50mm.... I did take extra food and wine to wait things out a bit if needed.

You have just reaffirmed the fundamental law of photography

Image size = subject size x focal length / distance

I also agree with the fill flash, sometimes, I shot a lot using fill flash with my *istD, but have gotten away from it lately, or should I say with later bodies. Part of this was due to Pentax discontinuing support for TTL flash. Combined with their lack of an AF teleconverter for a very long time. PTTL is very difficult to deal with when a TC that does not report true aperture is used. The other part of this was the improving high ISO performance really starting with the K5 and now the K1.

yeah, the flash can sometimes make a great different. Mee too have not used them with my long lenses for a while, especially after breaking two AF540FGZ foot assemblies... They are so fragile!
But I should revisit that ... I had in mind to create a DIY stronger support of the flash body on the over-lens bracket, using a top of a plastic bottle at some point, but never get to that... humm... I should relaunch that project this winter.
