So many wonderful images here.

Short-beaked Echidna. These are monotremes (egg-laying mammals), like platypus. The hind feet face backwards to help them dig in when they feel threatened. Very effective, but it does produce a very distinctive gait.

Very exciting to get such a clear shot. KP + DA 55-300 PLM at 300mm
Hi. Des. I knew what echidnas were, and what they looked like (in general!!), and that echidnas were monotremes, egg-laying mammals etc.

I did NOT know - their hind feet face backward...!!!!!!????? Do they even know if they are coming or going?????

Great capture, anyway!!!

I always wondered why they walked in such a strange way!

Glad you like it Peter. I was thrilled to get such a clear shot, with perfect light too. A very rare opportunity. Mostly all I see are quills!

A great experience when you finally get a good shot of something difficult and exotic! Now if only I could get a decent shot of a male Spruce Grouse - not really rare, just elusive for me!

Ah yes, Echidnas are like that - creatures I see from time to time but can never quite capture adequately. Good luck with the Spruce Grouse!

I see them often, and find them easy to photograph as they do not seem to mind the attention, unless you get very close.

More Little Egret pictures, this time taken with my K3iii/Sigma 800mm F5.6 APO EX/RRS BH-55/Eckla window mount.

And a Little Owl determined to hide from me.

Nice set of images. Did the Coop get the pheasant into the air as that last one suggests was about to happen?

This little guy was kind enough to stick out his leg to illustrate the backward facing hind legs.

Their vision is very poor, if you stand still they usually don't know you are there and will go about their business without realizing anyone is nearby. The Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve in Canberra has a 485 hectare predator proof area with a decent population of echidnas, some of the younger ones that were born since the predator proof fence was built are very relaxed around people.

Here's a long-eared owl taken with the M300/4 at about f/5.6.

No, the hawk was substantially outweighed by the pheasant and would drag it a few feet, rest, drag some more. She was trying to drag the kill into the bushes to hide.

Really fine image. I marvel that you're even able to locate that bird, they are so well camouflaged.
