Nice purchase Mike. Beautiful lens.
For those considering the FA*300 I posted this ages ago. I found a Canon (knock off) collar for the lens that doesn't interfere with hand held use and works just fine on both my tripod and monopod. And below a couple shots with the lens.

With the AF1.7 TC

Without the TC
Thanks for the link. Its good to know that a tripod mount ring can be used with it... there are a few of them right now on ebay.. all from chinese sellers and around USD20... should I search for one that fits the canon 70-200 and 66mm diameter?? Is that all?

That's right. I paid about $29 USD shipped for mine. Fits very well. Thread title changed.

Mine is a black one for the F* 300mm, I should really have bought the cream colour but it was a couple of £ more and I was too tight

You really do not need it to be honest but I got mine purely to tidy the lens up a bit, I will never use it.

SMC Pentax M 400/5.6

Just noticed this thread. There is some awesome gear here. I am seriously jealous of much of it. It must be nice to not have to focus your lenses manually all the time. I got the M 400/5.6 recently and rather like it. Won't be catching any birds on the fly but that's OK. It's prone to CAs and PF in certain situations but with the sun at my back..... it seems to have some potential. I've posted these elsewhere but they seem to fit here as well.

Both images shot ISO 100, f 16, 1/100 sec or so.

Now that the title has changed I am able to join this club too, thank you Peter.
Prior to Samsung rebadging Pentax lenses with the Schneider Kreuznach name this old lens was built (1959 or so) Exacta 360. 360mm f5.6 preset. Best shot so far is below

And here is the lens, very heavy but very cool.

Picked up the Bigma yesterday so now I have to start deciding which to keep because at the moment I have too many large lenses.
But then who could turn down a Bigma for the equivilent of $600.

The Sigma 135-400mm is now on Ebay and I will have to decide which to keep out of the F* 300mm, A* 300mm and Bigma as the wife (and my bank manager) is having a fit.

Couple of quick snaps at 500mm

Having to decide between lenses is the worst part...

Here's an oldie but a goody.1952 era Piesker. 400mm f4.5 screw mount. Made in Germany. This thing is big and heavy. Has 3 elements and the aperture is in the front behind the first element. There are at least 20 aperture blades.

But it's fast and takes a decent shot. A touch soft on the contrast but that's easily corrected.

Here it is with the Sigma 70-200mm EX f2.8 (itself a large lens) on the K20D

A couple shots:

F* 300mm f/4.5 ISO 100 1/200th

This was taken with the promaster 1.7x teleconverter. I can't really discern a significant amount of image degradation. It's a very good combination.

It doesn't focus particularly fast, but it is accurate, and it works in low light.

Finally I couldnt resist, I found a good offer for a FA*300mm f4.5 and bought it. I tested it yesterday and here there are a few sample shots. All hand held.

Birds were a little far so I found 300mm to be a bit short, all shots were cropped to show more detail. Here are my first results...

I also joined the club with a used Pentax F* 300mm f/4.5 that I bought from Kerrick James, one of the 4 in pentaixan.com

My copy of Pentax F* 300mm f/4.5 is quite beaten up on the outside but I am quite satisfied with the lens. And I really feel a pity that Pentax doesn't continue fine long glass like the F* and FA* equivalent. I know that they have the DA* equivalent with faster glass in f/4.0 and perhaps better IQ and weather protection. But the F* bests itself in its small and compact in size, and it really does bring in its own unique charms compared to the latest and greatest.

Thanks,
Hin
