Just curious about the pouch with the AIV version, if its the same quaility as the MIJ version?

My FA LTD's are MIJ copys and the leather pouch is real leather and feels so nice inside also has "made in japan" written on the bottom of the pouch. Then I compare it to the pouch that came with my DA LTD, its fake leather and inside feels no where near as nice as the MIJ FA LTD pouch's.

Are the AIV FA LTD pouch's the same as the DA LTD pouch's?
Simon, the pouches are the same no matter where the lens was made. In fact, the pouches that came with my 2 AIV FA Ltds both say "Made in Japan" on the bottom and look and feel the same as the pouch that came with my MIJ 43. Of course, I guess it may be that they run out of the MIJ pouches at some point, or they may be out-sourced to another Japanese firm and so will always be MIJ. Maybe running out of pouches is the tipping point to when they discontinue the FA Ltds. There definitely is a difference between them and the DA15 pouch, you are right. I had never really noticed before.

Mike, was this bit of lens porn shot before the encounter with the rogue wave? Your DA15 looks notably cleaner than I would have expected.
v5, yes, this was shot about a month ago before i sold the DA70 and yes, before the ocean smackdown of the DA15. The good news is that aside from from still a little grittiness of the focusing ring, the lens is back in business with no apparent ill effects.

last friday, i was shooting at the beach and a rogue wave nearly claimed my K-5, DA15, and tripod...i shot a burst as it was going down.

I'm starting to save towards getting a K5 now, I'm wanting the higher ISO capabilities. I love the 77, I'm still learning how to use it though.
Just do it. I'm going to pull the trigger on the 77 soonish I think.

I'm guessing either no one knows or my question has just been ignored.

People have read deeply into the semantic differences that separate "Assembled in Vietnam" vs. "Made in Japan", generally coming to the consensus that assembly is not the same thing as manufacturing/production. At the least, the components of the lens are slapped together in Vietnam, but I don't know if anyone really knows where the components came from or for sure who makes them.

So we don't know if anything really changed in the making of them then? It could all just be semantics?

No, it's not entirely semantics. They used to be made and assembled in Japan, but advertising "Made in Vietnam" is not that palatable for a consumer of optical instruments. I'm guessing the majority of the work takes place in Vietnam now, though the choice of the word "Assembled" implies that some stage is done elsewhere.

I am one of those who couldn't care less. Where it is made says nothing about how well it's made. I remember when "Made in Japan" was a sign of junk no-one would pay good money for.

China is going down a similar path. Most of the stuff they produce is junk, BUT, they have been very smart about their investments, and they are buying top of the line manufacturing equipment. Well at least in the steel industry and I would presume other industries would do the same. So In 30 years we'll probably look at china as we look at Japan today.
