Haloing is often caused by excessive use of the "clarity" slider in LR.

Hmm that could be it, is there a general "excessive value" for clarity? I have been using 55-65 Clarity on almost all my images in LR but have only really seen the halo/glow after Silver Efex.

EDIT: Its from contrast adjustments in Silver Efex...the shots look fine in colour

I typically don't go above 25-35 clarity if I want to avoid haloing in high-contrast areas. However, LR4 has eliminated haloing to an extent.

wow, i never exceed 15 in clarity before i start seeing the halo. maybe different versions have varying effects, though.
if you need such a high clarity setting, you could always process a second copy of the image without the boost and paint out the halo with a layer mask.

gee, thanks everyone! glad you liked the pano. it was a time consuming process and challenged my RAM quite a bit, but the computer came out of it unscathed, lol.

Happy to have recently joined the FA Limited Club with both the 43 and the 77. Spent a week in Hawaii recently and had my first opportunity to shoot with them. Here's a few of the early shots with the 77:

Had a really hard time getting the 77 off my camera...what a lens. Great subject separation/3d effect, renders OOF brilliantly, great focal length, and really sharp after stopped down a little bit (at all focus distances). So happy I bit the bullet and forked over the $ for this one!

Its more that I am learning, I was going on what I had read in some LR book, not sure exactly how much I need!

That said this one also taken with the FA43 on the same day and processed the same way (with just as much clarity) shows no halos (afaik) but I processed it differently in Silver Efex likely with less of the contrast slider. Unless you only get halos on a clear background. Does this look like "too much" clarity? Hard for me to tell if enough/too much with LR sliders

Deimos I don't think that's too much clarity at all, given the subject. An old man with a lot of character in his face wearing highly textured clothing -- all suitable targets for local midtone contrast enhancements.
