Nice shot! It's like the Lightning is beckoning the Pylon to come and catch it.

thanks! Very strange last night, i set out to shoot the milky way under clear skies and started to see little flashes on the horizon. Had to drive pretty far to follow the summer squall and finally saw some lightning strikes. The electrical tower has always been on my mind as a compositional element if i ever had a chance to shoot lightning and I was lucky to spot one nearby in a cornfield.

Electric Blue
Amazing colour and good use of the focal length.

My Nieces' Christenings this weekend gone and these two are probably my favourite shots...

MikeSF,

That is amazing. My attempts at doing this has resulted with pretty much black nothingness. How did you get the lightning to hold still or do you just know when and where its about to hit?

thanks all.
regarding the rule of thirds, the storm was quite distant, so all the strikes were pretty much in the same place but moving northeast. I started with a wide lens but switched to the 77 and framed it up where i was seeing most of the strikes happening. This shot is not cropped, so there is a good bit of resolution in the original image.

i don't want to jinx it, BUT, it was my first time ever shooting lightning and it was WAY easier than i expected. I literally set up the camera and set it to 30sec exposures in M mode, locked the shutter release open and walked away. The camera caught all the action while pretty much unattended.
Shhhhhhhhhhh!

That was artist Mitchell Soulfeather doing a series of light paintings at the Illuminares Lantern Festival in Vancouver.
