It's a personal preference/sjhooting style thing. I like tight candid portraits and the 77mm gives me the distance I need (sometimes I'll go to 135mm) Below 70mm, I'm just too much in the face of the subject for comfort--and it's no longer candid.

I would agree ... some of my best portraits of the girls come with the 77/1.8 as opposed to any of my lot of 50's/55's/58's or the DA 40 Ltd ... I like the extra distance (+ stealth) and would like to have a 43 as well, but really cannot find a justification for it ... maybe some day I will get my hands on one to try it out. J

You know, it's funny. The FA 43 Ltd was my first prime and--while it's certainly very fine--it's one of my least used lenses. For some reason, I find the normal-ish (40-70mm) focal lengths kind of boring. I'm talking crop digital, btw--despite my age, it's all I've ever known.
My first primes were in the 50-55 range as well. Since getting the 31 and 77 pretty close together, I hardly use the F50/1.7 on digital. Recently added the DA15 and I really like that lens as well. I like the 50 on film, and I'm tempted to get the 43 for film and digital, but I think I'd like to rent or borrow before plunking more money down on a limited I may not use much.

If you're like me, then no, your 77 will spend the most time on the shelf.
I have two young kids and it's fun to catch them unaware of the camera. 77 lets me do that pretty well on film and digital. I could see the 43 being a decent walk around lens on film or digital along with the K28/3.5 or 31 and 77.

Seriously, as soon as they see you shooting, they go all gooney. It's what the delete button was made for.

I've never really done portraits, so I threw myself into the deep end (done this so many times it's the only way I can learn now ) and signed up for an evening class. So here you guys go, my first portrait attempt with the fabled 77.

Yes, that is a light sabre she's using as a mic.

I had some fun with my old K10D today:

Pentax K10D - FA77mm f/1.8 Limited @ f/1.8

I also finished off a roll of Rollei Crossbird ISO 200 film in my Pen tax LX:

Pentax LX - FA31mm f/1.8 ASPH Limited @ f/4 on Rollei Crossbird 160*

*I prefer to slightly overexpose negative films, even if the result is a cross processed E-6 negative - you need the extra density for scanning.

Gorgeous quality to that second shot. I wish I still had my LX sometimes.

Digitalis, that flower shot with the 77 is damn impressive.

Both are with the 77, second is a Brenzier done up in ICE.

Not that the camera had much to do with it - though I will say that DOF preview is certainly a useful feature on the LX.
