I always go in May. School is still in so there's hardly anyone in Yellowstone. Some trails and roads are still closed for the winter, but in my opinion, it's the best time to go due to one, no crowds, and two, all the little animal babies are just being born.
I've been twice, last week of May/first week of June last year

May 15 - 20 this year

never saw any actually being born but did see a lot of " red dogs "

very very wet this year

here are some photos taken in the Lamar Valley

SOC from the 31mm Limited I rented

first no crop

then crop

the 2nd to the last shows my shadow

[ I had walked slowly out to the prong horns and did so quietly and using cover so I didn't disturb them at all, on the way in or back ]

Hayden Valley was basically empty of wildlife for the most part

April and May are the best Spring months in YNP but you have to be ready for any kind of weather from Winter to Summer. If you can stand some crowds and traffic June is full of wildflowers. I stay home in July and August and then head back in late September. I sometimes have it all to myself in the Winter months.

It looks like the FA 77 might have been a better option for you. All FA Limited lenses are great with landscapes, but I don't often use them for wildlife. How'd you like the 31?

Because I don't have a wildlife image with an FA Limited lens, I just posted these two from YNP of young bison with my F* 250-600 in the F/FA* thread: F* & FA* club! - Page 55 - PentaxForums.com

YNP is good in the winter, but I absolutely love Teton National Park in the winter.

I better post an image after all that...

I had it for a few days and was just playing around with it

didn't have it long enough to form any real conclusions or put it to its best use probably

It's been a while since i poked my head in here. Unfortunately haven't been shooting as much as I like.

This one's been keeping me busy:

Slowly starting to get the hang of the FA 77. I'm starting with inanimate objects. (People have expectations when you take their pictures; flowers don't.)

Love your motivation. I flower always smiles into camera, and shows no regrets afterwards.

I was reviewing a few pics from last year and quite a few with the 31 on the streets of London jumped out at me - this is a good representative

FA 31 Ltd plus K-1
