I have never used film before, there was intent when collecting the FA ltds to do so one day. I quite often use f2.2-2.5 instead of 1.9 or 2.8, however I will say this. F.2.8 on a FA Ltd is nothing to laugh at, f2.8 on a FA ltd can resolve like other glass behaves at 1.8. Try not to overly let it bother you.
It's mostly that many film cameras only allow changes to the shutter speed in whole stops so if you want more precision in your exposure then you need to turn to aperture, which can usually be changed in half-stop increments. If that isn't available then you just have to go a whole stop, which may alter D0F or exposure by more than you want.
