I'm not sure whether or not this has been shared elsewhere, but here's a relatively controlled comparison of flare between the SMC and HD versions of the Three Princesses.

Pentax FA limited flare test - HD vs. SMC - YouTube
Thanks for posting this.

In summary: flare is still there on the HD versions but on the 31 and 43 it's much less pronounced with the flares being less intense in colour. In the 77mm the difference is still there but is minimal.

Thanks for posting this. It seems like a very useful test. However, I mainly watched the girl's face which seemed to change very little or not at all between the lenses. I have rarely been bothered by this kind of flare since it is usually easy to avoid unless I want to include it.

useful to know that in direct light scenarios flare will be either the same or diminished, but that is only one kind of flare. There are several types of non image forming light that can degrade image quality but it is very tedious to assemble the absolute worst case scenario where they will all be present.

First day out with the 77 Limited!

Finally I broke down snagged a 77 from forum member mconwxdr (Thanks!). Not having a portrait subject nearby, I took it out for a walk in the nearest canyon. As often happens, it was small details that drew my attention, not the big picture. I used my K-1, plus the neat little shoulder bag Pentax makes to carry three Limiteds. Besides my new 77 was a 31 that I bought last year and a 15 Limited that I didn't get around to using this time.

Three 77 photos are shown here, in which the lens's dimensionality and detail delivered a dose of pixie dust. The midday Colorado lighting here at 7000 ft. was harsh and provoked purple fringing. The results weren't always predictable. When I aimed it at boardwalks and cable handrails silhouetted against bright water highlights and used wide open apertures, the purple highlights actually ate into the cable images, obscuring their outlines. Past f 5.0, though, that effect was gone and all was well. Using the 77 on my K-1 reminded me of how hard it is to get everything in focus (photo 3). Using my 31, in the last three photos, showed me how much nice, soft bokeh can be had even at f11.

Check out Photo 5, of the grass clump and daisies. If it looks a little less sharp that the others, that's because it's a crop. maybe the deepest crop I've ever attempted. It's taken from Photo 6, try to find it--- (it's in the extreme lower right corner).

I can see how this new three-lens Limited set is going lead me in inspiring directions!
