Hello! I've just finished to see 274 pages of amazing photos!!
But I've a question for you: I'm quite new in photograpy and I really can't understand the main usage of three of the lens I consider the best: the FA 31,43 and 77.
What I mean is: can I use those lens for portrait and landscape? Which is better for portrait (mainly)?
And looking to your pics, how can I understand if them are cropped or full images? I think that is important in order to understand what a lens can give me.

Hello Gabriele!

There's no simple or totally correct answer to a lot your questions, but I'll take a stab at it.

Can I use this lens for portrait?

I've used all three of these lenses for portraits. The FA77 is more of your classic headshot focal length, the FA43 is a short telephoto, which is a good range for taking photos of people while still keeping in an intimate distance, while the FA31 is best for environmental portraits where the person and the setting are both displayed. You just have to make sure that with a wider focal length you don't let the FA31 make the subject appear too wide.

If you would ask which lens is regarded primarily as a "portrait lens" that would be the FA77.

Which lens is best for landscape?

Again, all three could be useable for landscape, depending on the type of photo you want to produce. The FA31 of the three is the best for having the widest frame of view, but if you want to shoot a really wide landscape photo on a Pentax DSLR consider the DA14, DA15, DA16-45, DA12-24, DA21, DA* 16-50, etc.

As for whether an image is cropped or not, it is sometimes hard to tell, but you can usually guess if the aspect ratio (width versus height) appears irregular compared to other photos.

Shot some photos of my nephew with my FA43 on film recently. If you haven't tried using the FA Limiteds on film and have a film body lying around you can try it on I would recommend it. It's a lot of fun.

I never thought I'd be able to post in this thread, but the number of FA 77s in the marketplace recently swayed me. I'm going to be selling my Rokinon 85 f/1.4 in favor of my new (used) FA 77. I found that I used the Rokinon most at f/1.8-2.2, anyway. I went around yesterday at lunch taking pictures of flowers. I know, a mundane subject, but the 77 did a great job, IMO. My favorite shots were the wide open ones. I'm really looking forward to using this lens on people.
