I have had a few people ask me the same thing. I think the most important thing to tell people like this, is 80% of the photo is the photographer (ie composition, timing lighting) the remaining 20% is equiptment. A lot of (non photographer) people don't realise that you can get very decent results with a middle of the road point and shoot (depending on the scene of course). Obviously DSLR's have a few attributes that will set them apart from others namely sharpness, better low light performance and dynamic range. But if you are a poor photographer it won't matter what camera you use, you will still produce poor images.
I was very disapointed when I first started shooting with my SLR, Infact the P&S's were giving me better results.
