It's all good. I have come to learn that getting wide angle shots of a violent ocean often necessitate being "close" to the action. Oddly enough, instead of having all of my lenses in my vest pockets as I usually do, that morning, i was carrying everything in a hard case which I had set up on dry land. the big set of waves actually wrapped around the case and it started gliding out to sea but i was able to get to it in time. whew! Here is a 10mm view of the rising water just before the wave rolled in and clobbered me.

I felt like a helpless little twig being dashed around on the slick rocks.

The guy who rescued me, Matt, is far more loquacious; here is his account of the morning:

That's nuts Mike, ....nice shots but can't imagine having a suprise bath in the Pacific this time of year being too pleasant. Good thing you weren't on your own, it might have turned out differently.

I had 3 friends nearly get wiped out by a couple of waves crashing over a breakwater recently.
They managed to escape OK but a Canon 60D drowned. (she's since bought another one)

They've put up some good photos of flickr (public) and they're OK with linking.

small_C101_199 LR NN WB | Flickr - Photo Sharing! this one drowned Susan's 60D, way in the background.

small_C101_178 LR NN WB | Flickr - Photo Sharing! this one was bigger

The Surprise | Flickr - Photo Sharing! another angle. Dave (on the right) was very lucky not to get washed off into the boulders.

Be careful out there.

When you start playing around with nature like this, she usually wins!

That's why we have long lenses.

That photo makes me want to keep my 77. That is a stunning photo.
Thank you! Please reconsider. It is an amazing lens. It took me a little while to adjust to it, but I reach for it often now.

Great shot and brave bird! (or is it just the irresistible charm of the 31?)

I'm going to miss the 31mm I rented! I loved the 3D-like rendering of the lens, it was so magical.

Also, the 77mm had quite a similar effect even for close ups!

So the FA77 is only good for portraits?

Unfortunately the lights on the last shot are blown out. Will try again another time, but will probably use a wider lens though.
