Ah, I see, thanks. I knew about the lower noise, but didn't realize the point about sharpening. I guess the merged file would have more fine-grained information content that you could bring out in the sharpening process. What software do you use to work with the pixel shift images? I've read that Lightroom doesn't handle it directly. Thanks!
Lightroom isn't great for many images simply because it doesn't deal with movement -- any moving places in an image will have artifacts. I use Raw Therapee, which does an excellent job of motion correction. I create a 16 bit TIFF file that I then take to Lightroom for further editing. RawTherapee - Downloads

DCU that comes with the camera is another option and has motion correction, but not as robust as Raw Therapee.

I was adjusting infinity focus on my FA31 and I had to take a photo of the lens because it looks bizarre, seeing the FA31 without the iconic lens hood attached.

At first I thought you'd put some kind of close-focus filter on the front.

Hey, Pentax FA limited lens users: I just got the 3 limited lenses. My K-1 Mark II is still using the original firmware (1.05). I see that a later firmware update, 1.20, included improvements in focusing for the HD Pentax FA limited lenses. Will I have issues using my new lenses unless I upgrade to the latest firmware (which is now 1.30), or is the difference very slight?

I think your results are more likely to be improved by checking if any AF fine-tuning is needed. To my knowledge, Pentax firmware updates don't effect the AF of individual lenses.

Thanks for your comment. However, this is the notation on the Ricoh/Pentax website for the K-1 Mark II firmware updates:

Changes to V1.20
Optimized focus operation for new lenses HD PENTAX-FA 31 mm F1.8 Limited, HD PENTAX-FA 43 mm F1.9 Limited, HD PENTAX-FA 77 mm F1.8 Limited lenses and smc PENTAX-FA 31mm F1.8AL limited, smc PENTAX-FA 43mm F1.9AL limited and smc PENTAX-FA 77mm F1.8AL limited lenses.

So, it seems that they are saying that the V1.20 firmware update was necessary to improve focus for my three new Limited lenses. My camera right now is operating with the firmware that came on it new from the factory, V1.05.

Thanks - Richard.

I had always thought that it was more so that the camera recognized the HD versions of the FA limiteds and not just the original FA limiteds. Their profile is probably about the same, but for the camera to apply it, it requires the updated firmware.

As far as auto focus goes, I doubt there is much different. I certainly didn't notice any with my FA 77 or 31 after updating.

I'm using the V1.05 firmware currently, and I guess the camera is recognizing the lens properly. The right lens codes are being saved to the jpeg files so they show up as the HD versions in Lightroom.

I'm going to do the firmware upgrade and see if I notice any difference. I was meaning to upgrade anyway, but this gives me an excuse to do so.

"Truffle the Kitten" - Testing out my new HD Pentax-FA 77mm F1.8 Limited lens. 1/200s at F2.8, ISO 400, on the Pentax K-1 Mark II, cropped about 1/3. The 77mm focal length seems to work well for kittens.

The lens simply generates a number that is saved into the RAW/jpeg file. It then depends on how new your software is, as to whether it recognizes that lens code or not. If you are running Lightroom 5, it wouldn't. The camera probably doesn't have lens profiles for the HD FA limiteds though, unless you update your firmware.
