Hello, first post although I have browsed this thread a few times thinking I must contribute at some point.

First, a confession: I do not own a Pentax camera, I am a Sony Mirrorless user (Sony NEX 5N and now a Sony A6000).

However, I am a huge Tamron Adaptall fan and I'm currently building a review website that also tries to bring together all of the original bits and pieces I can find for each lens.

I currently own:

SP 24-48mm (13A) 2 copies at the moment, and even have two original lens hoods (one boxed)
SP 28-80mm (27A)
SP 90mm f2.8 1:1 Macro (72B)
28-200mm LD IF Aspherical (171A) 3 copies...
SP 70-210mm (52A)
SP 80-200mm f2.8 LD (30A)
SP 180mm f2.5 LD IF (63B)
SP 300mm f2.8 LD IF (60B)
SP 300mm f5.6 Flatfield Macro (54B)
SP 400mm f4 LD IF (65B)
SP 2x TC (01F)
SP 1.4 TC (140F)

I've owned and sold on:

28mm f2.5 (02B)
135mm f2.5 (03B)
SP 35-80mm (01A)
SP 90mm f2.5 Macro (52BB)
SP 35-210mm (26A)
SP 60-300mm (23A)

Any questions, feel free to ask!

Very impressive - well done on the 360B - you don't see many of those for sale.

I've missed out (just) on a few rare Adaptall SP lenses recently, but not sure I can justify buying many more at the moment. I'd like to try the SP 200-500mm though.

I've also dabbled with the big Tokina lenses from the same era and have used the AT-X SD 300mm f2.8, the AT-X SD 150-500mm f5.6, the SD 400mm f5.6 and the AT-X SD 100-300mm f4. I've also owned a few Canon FD lenses (80-200mm f4L, 100-300mm f5.6L, 200mm f4 1:1 Macro, 35-135 f3.5, 300mm f4L, 50mm f1.4 and so on).

I still have a soft spot for the Adaptall lenses though.

SP 23A (60 - 300) at 300/5,4

i have to confess that I bought 23A several months ago, but didn't really used this. The reason was that almost at the same time I bought SMC Takumar 300/4 (very fine lens). Now after first try I would say that it seems to have better IQ at the long end compared to my Sigma APO DG 70 - 300 (good copy) and also the Takumar lens (when asessing pure IQ not the overall look which is very pleasant with the Takumar). I think this lens do not really needs to be stopped down - because it performs great wide open at 300 mm (at least with my 10 MP sensor). The image below is a heavy crop, developed from RAW with some (not that intesive) PP.

Just a short side note for some of the folks that haven't been long enough to use the great old 35mm range finder bodies. The vented hoods weren't just for cool looks, they were necessary to allow the second RF window nearest the lens to 'see through' the hoods.

It is good to know the reasons behind the vented hoods. I use a cap to cover the front of the lens hood leaving the vents that can expose the lens to dust. When I manage to get a smaller cap to fit the inner part of the vented hood, that will work better with the vented hood. When I find the right cap, it will look like this setting with Voiglander 40mm f/1.4 range-finder type of lenses

Some vented lens hood go really well with the wide primes such as the 24 and 28.

Tamron SP 90mm f2.5 (52BB). I have now sold this lens, but I have replaced it with the SP 90mm f2.8 1:1 macro which I haven't used much yet.

I still have a soft spot for the Adaptall lenses though.

In my experience with Adaptall lenses, the ones I searched for longer time are the mirror 350/5.6, the 70-150/2.8 soft focus, the 300/2.8 (you're right about it) and the 180/2.5, plus the 200F teleconverter.
I like Tokina lenses too: I've got two of them in A-mount (ATX-PRO 28-70/f2.6-2.8 and ATX-PRO 100-300/f4), plus some Sigma zooms (non APO, old school) and some Leica R lenses....... but this is an Adaptall forum, not a Sony one.....

The SP 200-500/f5.6 is a strange lens, longer than the 400/4 but slightly thinner (95 mm. filter thread) and can be used at 500mm with an unusual short MFD. Negative: I found it not well balanced and requires its own neck-strap.

At this time I'm very busy for work, so I've no time to go around and take pictures..... Sorry !

Swan and cygnets with 300mm f2.8 60B. Even at f11 didn't quite have enough DoF to get cygnets in focus.

More pics in 300mm lens club.

Since we're dealing solely with manual focus in this Adaptall sub-forum perhaps a discussion of focusing aids would be useful.

When I was using the Adaptall SP teles I carried a 'range card' with a few cues as to DOF @ specific, common apertures and focus ranges. (Actually a 'cheat sheet' since my mentor of half a century ago made me memorize such stuff before I could use the good lenses. )

As applied to your situation I was prepared to adjust the manual focus point to make best use of the available DOF (or tweak the speed/aperture compromise as necessary). In that situation I'd have picked a focus point on the ground between the subjects that made best use of the available DOF.

My most useful trick is to focus on the ground or another appropriate plane of focus rather than the subject itself. This is especially advantageous when the subject is moving since it allows focusing on a stationary object or perhaps one with better contrast and shooting with confidence when the subject is 'in the pre-planned window'.

Aftermarket VF magnifiers and split image screens have always been must-have accessories.

Older eyes and acquiring a few AF teles have made me somewhat lazy today but the old habits still hang on.

Got a cheap Tamron SP 70-210mm f3.5 (19AH) for £9.99. Mint cosmetically, original box instructions - even the plastic sleeve for the lens. However, was cheap due to extensive (albeit fine strands) fungus.

Seems to work well, beautiful to handle and very well built. Sharp and nice colours, but close focusing seems to introduce quite soft, ghostlike attributes. Maybe a technique issue, or due to the fungus:

---------- Post added 05-23-15 at 12:36 PM ----------

Also got an absolutely mint Tamron SP 24-48mm (13A) with absolutely mint original hood (with the 77mm filter thread).

This is now my 8th copy of this lens and will be the one I keep as it is in the nicest condition. This is the third original hood I have managed to get for this lens, I will now keep one spare and the other I have given to my brother to go with his 24-48mm.

Even the rare Tamron SP things can be tracked down.

One final thing: a Tamron SP 200f 2x TC is available to buy right now if you look around...

The Tamron 135mm f/2.5 (03B) is my favorite 135 that I took with DA 15 and FA 43 as a 3 lens combo to Cayucos and its surrounding scenic places. The picture of the young surfer in b&w, the running boy and last two twilight sunsets were taken by the 135 in the mosaic of twilight colors.

And the following was taken on Cayucos beach area in the morning sunrise

Clicking pictures will lead you to this flickr album where all 135mm focal length is the Tamron 03B lens

It is a cruel world of LBA selling cycle. No one has shown interest in my duplicate copy of 03B.

Tamron 90mm F2.5 'macro'

Taken with a K-30.

Since I have been using a short lens hood (designed for a 50mm lens) I seem to be having less trouble with the purple disc problem using this lens. No sign of it here, even with quite a bright background.

P.S. How is it that an insect always sneeks into my flower pictures?
