Lens tests! Cold outside with snow getting deeper have decided to do resolution tests on a bunch of lenses. Test subject I one of second daughters pastel self portraits left behind when she moved out. Testing by f-stop to see resolution improvements or drop off can be pretty reliable by file size to plot a lenses peak performance. Color and contrast figures in to this as well. This started out by testing the fifties to truly see the hoopla of my Super Takumar m42 50mm f1.4 8 element was true as I have a later 71-72 vintage 7 element to compare with, it’s no myth.
Full subject shot with the $2 sleeper lens a Tamron 70-150 f3.5. An SP 200-500 f5.6 for these shots all at ISO 200 and f5.6 with my K-7. Peak performance of this and my SP 300mm f2.8 are at the low end of f-scale from wide open to f11 where they drop off. 200mm,300mm, 400mm and 500 mm in these pics. It’s a keeper and could even improve if the mold is cleaned from a zoom element. element.https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=560668&d=1641148848

Can you explain the relationship of picture quality to file size. Is this with RAW files?

I think I have seen something like this but I have not investigated.

I’m tight on space with laptop so went back to only jpegs. With the K-7 set at highest resolution I can scroll across the files and see the size difference getting fourteen files by f-stop click on the old 50mm f1.4 Takumar’s. Using Photoscape I’ve just been hitting auto for exposure and sharpening a crisp visually appealing lens will go from 10.7mb to 15mb + when saved at 100% quality. It also shows the good qualities at 100% crop. The minor adjustments when a lens is not at peak f-stop have little effect on file size, it’s just not there.

Thanks. I think I will have a look into Photoscape.

Yup, hand-held with that BIF GBH. That was before I injured my left shoulder, though, so not sure I could do that today.

The grebe photo I basically had to freelens, as just when I lined things up the P/KA adapter came apart, so I held the lens up to the body - I would not have shot at f/5.6 otherwise. I rarely see grebes, so when I got home I was gratified that even though the image was low-contrast and had that slightly hazy look from spherical aberration, the 31A captured a decent amount of detail. Quality work by the good folks at Tamron.

So what your saying is I shouldn’t be shooting offhand with my 31A after three shoulder surgeries?

I’m shocked out how good this lens really is. A beast yes but everything else is to like. Sharp from f5.6 to f13 then slowly drops off. Much better color and contrast then my 60B. A warming filter in the rear bay really looks good.

Maybe what I'm saying is... I should have rehabbed my shoulder! There is some definite atrophy there. Or maybe you're just stronger than me.

It is surprising, I guess, how sharp so many of the Tamron Adaptalls are. I didn't get into photography until the 2000's, so Tamron had discontinued the line by the time I began shooting, but I'm a bit shocked at how many people are so dismissive of Tamron, considering their legacy of really good glass.

Large Huntsman Spider. Adaptall 70-210mm 52A at f/11 85mm on K-x. Took a few shots to get what I was after. Took same with Canon 5DIV and 100mm EF Macro. Sure better resolution. I liked this composition better and the colours soo good.
