Only just realized my Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 17mm f/3.5 (51B and 151B) has a mismatch between marked and true infinity focus positions. Has been dealt with in another thread and how to fix. Or just use focus confirm. A few times I have set focus on infinity and taken the photo.
I wonder if this is the reason some people find the lens soft while others are very happy with the sharpness?

You've got it. There' SO many variables that many folks haven't yet learned about that most complaints are simply unanswerable in any reasonable manner -- despite the well meaning attempts. I shudder to think of . . .

I have an opportunity to get a Tamron lens or two this weekend. I need your help! Primarily, I use manual lenses on Pentax DSLRs. M42 mounts more often than KA mounts. If I use an m42 Tamron adapter - which is what is available - how do I close the aperture? There does not appear to be am A/M switch.

Get K mount adapters and use green button. Cheap enough.

Thanks for the possible work-around. I assume from your answer that one cannot manually close the aperture on a Tamron Adaptall with an M42 mount while mounted on a DSLR. Please confirm.

The first series adaptall lenses all have an A-M switch. The adaptall-2's and SP's don't. The M42 mount needs a little diy when used on the latter otherwise the lens won't stop down. More info here:

Just tried it out. There is nothing to close the aperture down, so that's a NO.

Thanks for that marcusBMG.
Alternatively, save the M42 adapter(s) for when you use Spotmatic or similar film camera.

Can you please post pictures of the Adaptall to M42 adapter showing both sides - just curious to see what is preventing the Adaptall-2 lens' diaphragm from opening and closing? I have a generic Adaptall to PK adapter and it let's me shoot with any Adaptall and Adaptall-2 lenses in Av mode regardless of the A/M switch setting.

The generic chinese adaptall pk mount is a pk mount without an aperture lever so it's just like an M42 mount lens in its behaviour. The reason the original M42 mount doesn't close down with adaptall-2 and Sp lenses is because the auto aperture pin needs to be depressed. There are 3 ways to do this:
1. m42 to Pk adapter with a rim that depresses the pin
2. Glue the pin in
3. Use a small piece of eg ballpoint pen sleeve to hold the pin in as per the pic on the page I linked above. this can be fitted either by mount disassembly, or by cutting it lengthways and squeezing it on.

Thanks Marcus, your website is certainly chock full of information - I'll be sure to browse through them more thoroughly at a later time. I am just curious as to how an Adaptall to M42 adapter looks like, since I'll never buy or use one - it just seem awfully redundant to use 2 different adapters to mount an Adaptall lens to a Pentax DSLR.

The pictures in your website showing the available Pentax Adaptall mounts, the generic mount seems to be showing the adapter to lens bayonet while the oem mounts are all showing adapter to camera bayonets.

55B

Cross-posted fm Mirror Lens Club #829

K5iis + Adaptall SP 500/8 (55B)

Shot through dirty window at ~17 ft (5+ M)

Cropped to about 50% of the image with moderate PP - contrast and sharpening.

Background over 120 yds behind feeder showed no bokeh; however, spots on window 12 - 18 inches in front of feeder produced classic 'donuts' easily removed with clone tool.

It's the nature of the cat lenses that they need contrast enhancement compared to conventional lenses.
