I have been chasing a shy Peacock butterfly around the garden with my 52BB without much luck. I have some Forget-me-nots so will post this instead.

24-48mm Lens 13A Caution on Push/Pull Objective Lens (e.g., DIY Mod of C2FH hood)

In the accessories section I discussed modifying the Tamron C2FH hood to use on the 13A lens. More recently my lens was essentially frozen (see previous post) and I believe it was due to my pushing and pulling on the front of the lens as I modified/tried/retried the C2FH hood.

I have found now that by pulling on the lens front (objective lens housing) I can get back control of focusing and FL, although as I change them it keeps locking up, and I then must pull again on lens front. Thus I would caution on activities that require pulling and/or pushing on the front of the lens, as I was doing.

I'm pretty sure dms that you are suffering from worn mechanicals, specifically cam guides, in this lens. This is an issue with most of the adaptall zooms, the 01A 35-80mm is particularly well known for this and for the lens to be loose and rattly and for the zoom action to jam when the focus is spun into the close focus zone (which is linked to the zoom). Doing as you have done and manually tweaking and stretching the lens keeps things going. The only fundamental soluton is disassembly and replacement of the worn parts.

Sometimes there are more simple things that can loosen up with usage, I think it is the 27A that has some screws under the grip that can be tightened.

Adaptall 2 24-48mm stuck at 24mm

Mine now is mechanically frozen (except for small focusing range from about 7 ft and closer)--including no rattling noise--but that it never had or not noticeably so.

No, just 24 mm FL is good, although it is probably the lens's best performance FL, and my most used one. But (in my case) a hyperfocal distance of 7 ft, is not very useful, as I use (used!) it for theatre work and some street photography.

Thanks and best of luck.
Here a couple of shots using it as a 24mm at about f8. The building shot across the lake was taken with a full frame Sony A7ii, the palm tree was using a Pentax K-70.

So yes, this is a very good 24mm lens, sharp, high contrast. It is heavy and slow aperture if used as a 24mm prime.

Yes, on a FF at f/8, about 7 feet focus would would be good for close up to infinity, but for theatre I would likely be about 1 stop closed, or about f/4.5, and that would not give me much DOF and it would be too close! Yes it is a nice lens, and when I only wanted one lens (for example walking around Key West) it was a good choice for an APS-C cropped sensor.

I've owned a few copies of the 13A, and also a few of the original hoods. I've recently borrowed one with the original hood and picked up a 77mm 1000ND filter to do slow exposures of rivers with my full frame Sony A7ii. A few issues...

1 - you can't shoot below about 30mm because if you do all four corners of the image become reflections back off the filter of what is behind the camera.
2 - Even with the original hood, the sun out of frame (side on in most cases) causes flare and ruins the image.

I have a soft-spot for the 13A, but have to say I'm disappointed to run into these issues. I'm going to look for other wide-angle lenses that are a bit more practical in the field I think.

Sample images (you can see the effects of flare in the top right of images.

I have been getting some great shots recently with a Tamron Adaptall 2 35-135 (40A) on a Sony A7ii. Here I have included a couple from today's walk around the lake near home.

On APS-C if have almost given up on my 24-48mm (but just missed one from an online auction last week) and reverted to using a prime, either a Vivitar (Komine) 24mm or adaptall2 28mm. Its a shame, the 24-48mm range on APSC is really quite useful on my K-70, so I have bought a much heavier (but faster and very sharp) Sigma EX DC 17-50mm, still to test it.

Often I find that lens' bokeh too edgy, but for this shot that's perfect.

Out and about with the 28mm f2.5 02B on a Sony A7ii full frame. Not convinced by this lens, this was stopped down to f11.

Thanks!

With bokeh, so much depends on how close one is to a lens's closest focusing point one is (I was at or close to it with that shot) AND on how far back the out-of-focus subjects are or how quickly they recede away from the focused-on point. In this case, what was just behind the front surface of the phono cartridge, probably is a little edgy, but everything else steadily dropped away into increasingly less focus/edginess.
