(cross-posted in the 300mm+ lens club)

Over the past few days I've been renewing acquaintances with my Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 200-500mm F5.6 (31A), a pretty good lens that sometimes gets a bit lost among the seeming myriad of long tele lenses I own.

All of these images have been cropped by over 90% - not something I normally do, but I was interested in how far I could push things...

Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 60-300mm on K-70.

My favourite system for moon photos. In this case 1/400sec at F8, ISO 800 handheld through a window and manually focused.

Cropped about 30% x 30% and slightly sharpened in MS Photos.

Heard some buzzing and went to evict another bumble bee from the conservatory. Too late! SP 90mm 52B. Mr Bumble has bumbled where he shouldn't and has had it, at the "hands" of a false widow (I think).

...ok, i pulled out a big box of old film slides and negatives that would make a great project to copy into digital ... so ... ... ... since i like to use these Tamron adaptalls ... i wonder which one would be a good copy lens for " pretty decent " results in a home-made copy set-up. i have been playing with a temp set-up using my 01a ... but would my 72b be better ... or is there even a better of the adaptalls to use for this ? ... thanks for any comments ... and hints welcome ...

Depending how you set up your home-made system, the 72B would be ideal if you don't need to be screwing components together. I would be very tempted to use the older 52B with a 49mm thread if that makes connections easier. I have a system based around a Pentax M slide copier and a non-matching bellows, and I use a 52B, sometimes a Pentax or Sigma 50mm macro with a 49mm-55mm stepping ring. All the SP 90mm macro lenses are really sharp at close focus.

This is why I just joined PentaxForums. Great photography, and a good source of information on Adaptall lenses. I've got the 31A as well, purchased used for a good price with both the 1.4X and 2X (01F) teleconverters.

I've only used it with my Nikon digital cameras so far, but will try it out with my Pentax film cameras soon. When I have enough worthy photos to do a proper review, I'll put in my two cents, as this is a lens that lacks a lot of information on the Internet, especially when used with several models of cameras as the Adaptall system should be.

Glad you joined, and looking forward to your thoughts and findings with the 31A!

31A + 140F TC (hand-held)...

The 31a is one of the few Adaptalls I've not owned. I'd pick now up for the right price but they were always a bit too pricey for my liking. I've owned the Tokina 150-500 f5.6 SD which was good and I've seen a comparison that shows through 31a is sharper, but with more fringing due to the lack of LD glass. I've also been lucky enough to own a Canon FD 500mm f4.5L lens, which with the fluorite element has almost zero CA of any kind.

I'd like the 31A at some point to get me nearer my mission of using all the Adaptall range. I'm not far off!

Tamron 19AH #1. Storm Dennis.. or was it the other one.. Pentax KS2, f8

Tamron 19AH #2. Near perfect light for flowers this morning IMO - just a bit of light cloud to cut the sunlight. This lens is going back - won't focus to infinity. K30 f11.

I envy your usage of the Canon FD 500mm f4.5L. I have the Pentax K 500/4.5 and while it is not unusably sharp wide open, the CA can be pretty heavy.

I've used most of the Adaptall-2 SP lenses, except for the 30A 80-200/2.8 and 63B 180/2.5.

The funny thing about the 31A fringing is that there is quite a bit of it, but it is curiously gentle, in that it often is not hard-edged like I've found on some other older film-era lenses. It also sometimes surprises me with a smoother out-of-focus background rendering than I expect.

Blue Jay with Tamron 65B 400/4 Adaptall-2

I wasn't particularly impressed with my 65B the it was mounted on my K3, on the KP it really delivers-especially in flat lighting.

Huh, I find the 65B to deliver quite nicely on my K-3 II, no matter the aperture and also when used with a quality 1.4x TC...
