Adaptall Mount Club (Tamron).

I've been lucky enough to own the special 'LD Four' from the Adaptall SP line (I even own the original brochure for them) - 80-200 f2.8 is a stunning lens, the 180mm f2.5 is just the most beautifully crafted little thing, the 60B 3000 2.8 is a joy to use with the palm rest and the 400 f4 always felt special. Sadly I sold all of them on in favour of Canon FD L lenses (which I now have also sold on in favour of a Sony RX10iv). However, I still have my Sony A7ii and I find myself once again buying vintage lenses, especially Adaptalls!

You've done some really outstanding work with that big Canon 500/4.5L. I'm particularly partial to the rabbit shots.

I agree with you that the Adaptall 400/4 feels special. It is sharp and fast and hand-holdable when necessary, and takes the Pentax A 1.4x-L Rear Converter very well. I've been shooting the 65B wide open recently, and it delivers as long as the meatpad pressing the shutter button does...

Thanks for the FD 500 f4.5L comments. For just over a year I rented a house that overlooked a woodland valley, it was perched on the side. I put up a bird feeder and then a branch as a perch and could shoot wildlife sitting on my bed and because of the huge drop the background was a distant woodland on the other side, so you could wipe it out even at f8. Had all sorts of birds landing on that branch and was able to mount the lens on a tripod with a gimbal and pre-focus so you could absolutely nail the shots. Given my penchant for buying old lenses and testing them out it is a real shame my new garden offers none of that easy wildlife.

I have been buying more adaptalls, just got the SP 70-210mm f3.5-4, owned one before but sold it on before using it much. I also snagged a fairly cheap SP 17mm, original 51B with built-in filters, sadly no hood which will be almost impossible to track down. I also just had delivered a very old Adapt-a-matic 135mm f2.8 with the metal focus ring. Lovely little thing, will play with it soon. Oh, and a SP 28-135mm f4-4.5 and the 28-70 f3.5-4.5 with original hood for next to nothing.

My Tamron 65B 400/4 paired with my oldest Pentax DSLR-the K-r. I hadn't tried the K-r with the Tammy 400 until now.

A few days ago I acquired a Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 80-200mm f/2.8 LD (30A) and so far it seems quite good.

Wide open there is a bit of spherical-aberration induced glow - especially at 200mm - but good detail. The glow decreases and detail increases upon stopping down.

Purple fringing is noticeable, but CA is not bad at all.

Max magnification is approximately 1:5, which is not bad for this sort of lens. For comparison, the Pentax DFA* 70-200/2.8 is about 1:8, the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is also 1:8, the Tamron AF 70-200/2.8 Macro is 1:3, and the Tamron SP 70-210/3.5 19AH is 1:2.66.

The 30A's one of my all-time favorite lenses. Served me well for 35+ years from Spotties to K-3ii. If I set out to intentionally commit photography it was always within reach.

Versatile from pseudo-macro with extension rings to tele with a PzAF 1.4 TC and indistinguishable from my SP 180/2.5 (63B) at 180mm. Nerve damage to my left hand caused both to be replaced with an AF SP 70-210 but it's still hangin' out with old friends here.

Works both far and fast or close and colorful.

Sorry for the late response, I just saw this. My feelings on the 30A are currently mixed. I also have the 19AH, which is a bit slower and not quite as sharp but it is also more svelte and I use the close-focus capability frequently.

It's early days yet on the 30A so we'll see what happens.

Today I took out the Tamron Adaptall-2 300/2.8 (360B) coupled with the Pentax A 2x-S TC, stuff I don't use very often.

The blackbird is a heavy crop; I cut away about 85% of the frame.
