My 24-48mm has a mechanical fault at about 40mm, so my kit would be: 24-40mm, 35-80mm and 23A. I am not sure how much better the 19AH is compared to the 23A, but I am thinking about starting a search for a 19AH.
I've never used the 23A, but from what is reported at adaptall-2.com the 19AH is a bit better optically, sacrificing quite a bit of range, though. I mostly use my 19AH for pseudo-macro type work.

Had I known I would encounter a bear, I would have taken my 30A or 360B.

55B would be more comfortable, then I could keep a greater separation

Yes, I saw that. I have both 52B and 52BB for pseudo macro, so the 19AH may not get much use if I buy one. The 23A is superb at 300mm, and it's the same weight as the 19AH, so I would need to convince myself that I could see a difference at 200mm.

My 35-80 is gone to a part-time repairer (previously, somebody tried a repair with the wrong grease, leaving oily smears on some internal elements) so I am also deciding whether to get another 01A or stick with the very interesting 40A. I will sell my 22A now that I have the 40A, I think.

gary .. if you are in the states, i can ship you a 19ah to play with for a while .l have two ... optically they seem fine, the guy i got them from thought there was something wrong with them .. so far i see only a little dink on one ...in any case they seem to take friendly pics .. let me know i don't need two. on the 40a, i at first thought it a funny plasticy lens, but i haven't yet, at least as a snapshot amateur, outran it's capabilities.

That's incredibly generous Fuzzy, and thank you for the offer. This forum is full of generous and collaborative folks, that's why I keep with it and I keep both questioning and commenting.

Unfortunately for me I am in the Antipodes (the Perth in my by-line is the Perth in Western Australia) so your kind offer cannot be accepted. I believe there is a 19AH locally for sale, so I may see whether it is available for a trial-before-buy.

The 40A seems quite good compared to most consumer grade zooms of the era, but not as easy to handle as the 01A. Maybe not as sharp either. I just struggle to justify buying another 35-80 zoom when I have a 40A and a Pentax F 35-70, as well as a rarely-used Pentax F 35-105. The Adaptalls are a side-hobby really, the peak lenses I have in this range for my K-70 are the Pentax 16-85 and Sigma 17-50.

I could rave all day about how good the 01A was on high quality slidefilm, and then on the K-70 before it failed me.

The 01A really is a special zoom. My copy has an issue where it won't properly change the aperture when controlled via the body, but otherwise works fine. I've tried multiple PKA adapters but to no avail.

It is large and heavy compared with the F 35-70, but it is sharper and has the wonderful close-focus ability. If I had a FF camera I'd probably use it more than I do.

65B SP 400mm f4

Daaa Daaaaa!!
I doubted i would ever get one of these, I can't remember a previous occasion where one came up for auction. Only the occasional pricy BIN. The listing had a make an offer option, so I considered what would be the balance between bargain hunting and prompting a yes. Well worth the price in the final analysis - lens is in very good nick, particularly optically.
I took the lens down to Angel Bay today for first shots, and found a photo worthy moment - a seal had just given birth to pup! With 014F1.4x tc = 560mm.

Congratulations!!! I'm a big fan of my copy. Optically, it is the best I have over 300mm.

Did the sale include the hood?

Looking forward to reading your thoughts on how it compares with the DFA 150-450.

A quartet with the 31A @ 500mm... I had a bit of a scare a few days ago when it slid off the tripod as I moved it... I actually managed to briefly slow its fall with my foot, so it landed more gently than it might have... some cosmetic damage but fortunately that was all.

When I had one I used a very long plate with a little brace on the part between the two rings (the one bit that doesn't move). The brace helped a lot.

Yeah, basically did the same but with a much longer plate -- makes balance much easier.
