I recall earlier in this thread people were giving a lot of love to the SP 60-300? I owned a copy in the past, but didn't keep it long as I favoured the Canon FD 100-300 f5.6L, and I have never used it on full frame. I am looking at telephotos for full frame landscapes, so sharpness across the frame and into the corners is important. Looking at the Adaptall-2 site the SP 60-300 Modern Photography test results show it outperforms the SP 70-210 f3.5 - which I have used for landscape on full frame with good results.

I am tempted to buy one, but here in the UK all the eBay auctions want 3 figures for them, I've found one for £59 plus postage from a camera store, comes with original hood and case. Worth a punt, or should I just settle for the 70-210 SP I already have?
If they are actually SELLING on eBay for more than £60 then I would say buy it from the store and if it turns out not to be what you want then sell it on eBay for at least what you paid for it.

I picked up at 40A because it was attached to a PKA adapter, but I've been surprised by how sharp it is. I haven't had a chance to put it to a real test. Today I managed a few photos in the hour between rain storms (expected to last a couple more days). So the lighting wasn't ideal. But the focal length range came in very handy at times. I probably need to do a bit more post-processing to get the colours closer to what I was seeing, but today wasn't about bright colours.

Thanks both for thoughts on the 23a, I was surprised at how it tested better than the 19AH, so am intrigued to pick up another copy.

Those on eBay are not selling, priced far too high.

What is interesting about the 23A is just how long it was produced for, one of the last Adaptalls to go out of production, must have been doing something right.

I've got a price list from November 1993, showing what Adaptalls were still for sale and for how much. The SP 300 2.8 was £2,100. The 400mm f4 was better value at £2,200 as it included the SP 1.4tc as well. The 70-210mm f3.5 was £300 and the SP 60-300 was £330. The 40a that gets a lot of love on here was £270, so not a cheap lens at all! The SP 35-105 f2.8 was £550, and these can be picked up very cheaply online when you see them. The SP 17mm was £300, the 24mm f2.5 just £180. The SP 90 f2.5 was £250.

Lens hoods were £12.

Wow those prices are higher than I thought. Any chance you could scan that, it's interesting?

I will scan and upload them to my website at some point, I'll then share the link with you. I have dealer price lists from 1998 and 1999 as well! I have a lot of Tamron brochures from the Adaptall Days as well, so they will be scanned in at some point.

That would be very helpful. I've got some instructions and a couple of sales brochures, too. Some of the information isn't available on the Adaptall-2.com site, such as the instructions for the 70-210 f4 AF model 47A.

By the way, I had the 19AH 70-210 f3.5 until around 2002. It was still being sold for around $850 CAD at that time. I traded it to a friend in exchange for his help at an out-of-town wedding while I had a broken elbow, so I think we both had a good deal. (I paid $250 for it used in mint shape a couple of years before, and he could probably still get almost that today.)

So, in a moment of complete madness (okay, so it was pre-planned) I bought another Tamron lens at auction.

I'll head out on Monday on the motorbike to go and pick it up from the Lake District.

I got this: (images courtesy of saleroom.com)

I kept both my Adaptall 90s, the 52B and the 52BB. Both are superb, I use them on K-70 with a PK adapter and on my Sonys with M42 and m42-NEX adapters. I also have both the 1:1 extension tube and the 01F teleconverter/1:1. Both are very good but the interchange of adapter rings is very fiddly when adding these two things.

Definitely both are great general-purpose teles as well as macro. I just cannot bear to part with any. I have also just ordered a SP35-80 (01A), since my previous one was possibly the best lens I had. Add to my 28mm, 60-300mm and a wonky 24-48mm that behaves as a 24-35ish.

Nothing wrong with having lots of Adaptall 2 SP lenses, is there? The only two that do not get a run very often are the 500mm mirror and the 40A.
Ok so that 35-80 arrived with a jammed zoom ring, making it a 80mm semi-macro, and a very good one, but maybe not as good as the 52B. I found another, and it is in perfect new condition, complete with hard case, testing in next few days. My Adaptall-2 collection is now:
28mm
135mm
500mm (earlier version 55B)
300mm CT-300, not a star performer
90mm (52B) and the later 52BB
wonky 24-48mm, I will buy another if I find a cheap one, less than about $100US
35-80 SP in perfect condition, plus the damaged one to return to seller
35-135mm 40A , plus a 22A in good condition to sell cheaply
60-300mm 23A
01F converter and the 1:1 macro extension tube for the 90mm, both quite clumsy to fit on and off.

Surely enough??

My god man. you dare to use the word 'enough' when you don't have a complete set of the SP range?

Wash you typing fingers and head back to eBay, there is work to be done
