I am fascinated by the work dcshooter has done as well as the comments and work of alisant. I own Canon FL 55 mm f 1.2, Canon FD 55 mm f 1.2, and Canon 50 mm f 1.4. I am very interested in having one or more of these lenses converted for use with Pentax K-mount cameras. I will greatly appreciate any advice, comments, reactions to the idea, particularly regarding quality of FL vs FD lenses, and which ones are best for converting. I have a good number of other FL and FD lens, but these are the three most interesting ones.

I havnt been able to convert FL to Pentax with with working aperture yet but it should be possible after a lot of hard work completely destroying the original FL mountbase.
FD (New versions) are a lot easier since the original mount can be saved and even completely reverted back to the original mount if needed.

Not sure about optical differences but I have a 35/2 FL that seems to be wonderful.... and heavy with a lot of gorgeous feeling.
My 35/2 FD New is incredible light (compared to the older one) with perfect optics and so is my 20/2.8 and of course the 50/1.4 and many other.

If you want to I could possibly convert a lens for you and then ship it to dcshooter for a delicious "paint job"

CZ Planar 50/1.8 in Rollei QMB mount (wide open) ... it will (force) fit ever so nicely on a PK, but nothing past 1.5m due to registration difference ... OK by me, I like to shoot close. Got it for a song at a swap along with the Voigtlander in Rollei QMB, but it does not fit as well ... note the spider's web.

@ about f2.8 ...

That sounds like a nice idea. I will send you a private message about this.

And now, some lens porn:
I was wondering, when you do some conversion like this one, the K mount used, is it the cheapest M42 to K adapter with flange that we can find on e(vil)bay ?

Sorry to miss your post. My Canon FL to Pentax K conversion brought my Canon lens to the lowest level of K functionality. The FL itself does not automatically close down for metering, and has a closedown ring for that purpose. After closing down the aperture,. however, you can use aperture priority mode, although I usually just go all manual since I generally prefer my own manual settings to those selected by K-5II or K-7 in aperture priority mode.

My conversion was relatively inexpensive, only $155 for both the mount conversion and new anodizing finishing job to make this quite an attractive lens, quite aa low-cost way to join the f 1.2 club, given the fact that I already owned a seldom used suitable Canon lens as a conversion candidate.

New "Franken-lens" ... a Jena (Carl Zeiss) Cardinar 100/4 in Werra rangefinder mount ... K-mount tube to about 24mm to get proper registration distance.

Test shot (near wide open) ... with the 24mm of tube ...

Some test shots ... with a bit of extra tubing ...(x-post)

Lilac still life with Canon FL 55/1.2 on K-5II

This lens was one reason for film users to believe in Canon film cameras, the classic FL 55 mm f 1.2, a lens series that predated the FD series. The lens does not adapt to K mount without extra glass between lens and camera, which in effect destroys the lens' capabilities. Instead, this copy has had the FL mount replaced by a Pentax K-mount, preserving the lens' unique rendering and sharpness. It is a bit labor internsive in operation as you must meter wide open and manually step down the lens to your preferred aperture before shooting. That step is avoided, of course, when you are shooting at f 1.2. DOF on this lens, as best as I can make it out, is about 3/4 of an inch.

I have to do some adjustments like cutting off the excess barrel length, but I think that it will do infinity. I will get back to you later ...

FLASH !!!

Another new "Franken-lens" creation ... a S.F.O.M. 140mm f/3.2 projector lens (6x6 format) with bellows on the K-5 ... first test shots (SOOC, except for minor LR4 adjustments/crop) ...it will do infinity and some great macro/close focus ... more samples later ... J (x-post)

I recently modified an older Canon FD 55mm F1,2 so that it works like a K or M lens on Pentax DSLR.

The modification took several days since the margins are so very very tight and Im afraid it could have looked much better if I had more time and better tools but it at least works well and should last a long time. Its a joy to use and of course focus to infinity.

First is a poor shot of the modded lens. You can see the Pentax arm that connects to the cameras aperture lever.

Then some shots with it, both full frame and 100% crop.

Then some straight shots just to look at the rendering.

Unfortunatly this lens was for someone else so I need to get one myself. In the mean time I guess I have to satisfy myself with my Canon FD 85mm F1,2 ...
