Here's an image of the crescent moon I shot some time ago with my NEX 7 and Tamron 55BB 500mm f/8 mirror, ISO 100. I took this photo and one with my Century 500mm f/5.6 refrector, set to f/8, to see if there was any difference in contrast and sharpness. I was surprised to find the two images were almost identical. That's one thing I like so much about the Tamron mirror. It rivals a refractor in terms of both sharpness and contrast. The CPO's photo is a bit overexposed, but exhibits a touch more contrast. This is easily handled in post, if desired, however.

In case you're curious, here's the shot I took with the Century 500/5.6:

In keeping with the astronomy theme, here's a shot of the second "Diamond Ring" phase from last week's total solar eclipse. Taken in Tetonia Idaho with a Pentax K-5, 500mm f/8 Spiratone Minitel Mirror Lens; exposure was handheld at 1/50 sec. The rings are from the internal reflections between the mirrors. The star, Regulus can be seen adjacent to the Sun.

Eclipse shots with Sigma 600mm f/8 mirror lens and Pentax K-r

These were shot during the 2-minute, 38-second long eclipse total phase Aug. 21 in western Kentucky. I had spent a lot of time practicing and deciding which settings I needed. I think I was rewarded with creditable photos.

Excellent work. Is that a star I see in the far left of the frame of your second shot -- or just a hot pixel?

Thanks,

That point of light on the far left is the star Regulus, in the constellation Leo the Lion.

When I first saw it, I checked both my sky map app and photos by others, because I thought it might, indeed, have been a hot pixel. But, sure enough, that's the exact location of Regulus!

Eagle and Swans with Spiratone 500mm

Been reading about mirror lenses and could not pass up a good deal from the Marketplace here.
Figured that if it does turn out to be a door stop for $40 what the heck; right
It is a Spiratone Minitel 500mm f8.
Mounted it on my K7 and took a few photos this morning.
Only comment is you need to nail the focus but I will get it with practice.
The eagle is about 300 yards or so away so was happy that I could actually see that it was indeed an eagle
I think I am going to have some fun with this lens cause it is too light to be a door stop.

Clarence

Good evening,

Ive got me a Sigma 600mm f8 mirror lens second hand on gumtree. But I really struggle to mount it to my Pentax K3. Today Ive been to a shop in George and even there no one could assist me.

Please post a pic of the mount, and be a bit more specific about the problem.

That doesn't appear to be a K-mount...
