Very impressive DOF there Simon. I bought the Sigma 50 1.4 and it's a great lens, but for me, the BOKEH is a little bit too smooth at times. You need some fireworks at the party I think.

155 Megapixels

DA* 50-135

I've been playing with panoramas using MS ICE to stitch them together. But it would have been nice to use a shift lens, or a ladder to get higher, in these shots because the foreground is pretty boring. The level of detail in the original file is astonishing though as it is made up of 13 individual shots. The DNG is 642MB in size.

I can't wait to try this on more exciting subject matter.

Simon, you are making me think about swapping the FA50 for the DA55. Is it a worthwhile thing to do?

I guess that all depends on what you want in a lens and if your happy with it or not?
Most people buy the FA50, then later on get the DA*55 and the sell the FA50 soon after.

It's not 'officially' a weed unless you can smoke it.

That really depends what you are after.
FA50 is much smaller, and lighter with slightly faster AF (not much though).
DA*55 is SDM & WR.

IQ? FA50 has less contrast wide open, and has different colours. More FA I'd say. FA50 goes for yellows cyans. DA* is very contrasty right from wide open, prefers reds and magentas.
Sharpness? At centre of the frame there isn't really difference between the two even wide open. In corners it depends. It seems to me that FA50 has more curved field and therefore if you focus with the center spot then corners will be soft, if you however focus on the edge the it will be sharp, although DA*55 still has slight edge I'd say. And then of course DA* has rounded blades, that means up to f4 it has circular highlights in OOF areas while FA50 is pretty much octagonal from f2 and some copies are prone to "ninja star" effect which I've never seen with DA*

choice is yours

I have both at the moment but not for much longer...

Thanks for the advice guys.

It is looking like LBA will win out in the end and I'll probably end up with both......Just for evaluation purposes you understand.

I will sell one of them once I decide which I prefer....probably.....eventually...

Some might call that bokeh "busy", but I rather like it. It's just so startling different. Almost looks like it was manufactured in post.

I thought the exact same thing: bokeh is a bit uneasy and just might draw attention away from the core subject. Judging by other photos here, I believe this is not typical bokeh rendition by the DA*55, is it.
