Yo! Hai everybody! I got a DA* 60-250 on loan (maybe gonna buy it). Here's a quick shot with it on the K-1 in FF mode;

Eddy, it doesn't look like you want to give the DA 60-250 back.

Mine is so good at the 250mm that I haven't used my F*300 f4.5 again, on the K-70 24MP it has more resolution than when I used my F*300 f4.5 on my K-30 16MP.

If I bought the DA* 60-250 f4 first I would have never looked at a 300mm prime. The F*300 f4.5 actually cost me more money too but I was doing quite a bit of 35mm film photography back then so needed the aperture ring.

Certainly appears to being a very capable lens. I've just seldom shot with anything longer than 77-135mm so it's taking a little time to learn the basics such as what I personally can get away with shutter speed wise at the longer 250mm side of things, but it's nice that I am able to take photos of things I wouldn't normally have been able to reach.

I had only one issue with it thus far (on a paid job!). I connected it to the K-1 as I normally do and noticed that AF wasn't working at all. So I went to adjust the focus ring manually and to my horror this made no impact or change as well either! I disconnected the lens, placed it on the KP and breathed a sigh of relief as it was behaving normal, I put a FA77 on the K-1 and confirmed that was ok as well. I put the 60-250 back on the K-1 and it was working fine once again.
So I don't know what that was about?

Yes long telephoto photography is a whole different ball game. From a landscapers POV it really opens up new opportunities and is a refreshing change to your typical 'must use wide angle' thought process. Only beginners and people who never progressed think that a focal length 'belongs' to a category of photography, perhaps barring macro and other specialist lenses.

Compression is another huge advantage besides the actual reach. Pixel peeping can even be enjoyable picking out church spires, telegraph poles and other features from long distances... It can be astounding the detail you can retrieve and quite unbelievable given good atmospheric conditions i.e. no heat haze, humidity, wind etc. distorting the long view.

I hope that hiccup wasn't a sign of the SDM motor starting to show problems, the 60-250 does not fail as often as the DA* 16-50 and DA* 50-135 but failures have happened, mostly in the earlier models before Pentax supposedly upgraded the SDM and circuit board.

Hopefully it was just a temporary bad contact between lens and camera, it is worth cleaning these with contact cleaner if in doubt.

If the SDM does fail, does that mean it can fall back onto using the Screw Drive instead? How does that happen if so? Does it need to be sent away, is it DIYable, is it performing worse as a Screw Drive etc?

DA* 60-250 can only screwdrive on very old bodies where SDM does not work, it cannot be converted to screwdrive (unlike 16-50 and 50-135) to work on more modern SDM compatible bodies. Basically you cannot use screwdrive on any bodies from a certain model dating back to 2007 or something I forget which exactly.

I've never used it on an old body like a *ist but you'll not be doing that anyway and neither will I

The SDM probably is OK on it, the 60-250 SDM fails much much less frequently than 16-50 or 50-135 where you have a decent chance of failure.

Using the lens more frequently apparently helps the SDM from failing, if you leave it for ages like a car the handbrake ceases up analogy.

I bought mine used from a camera shop with a 1 year guarantee cheaper than what they go for privately, however it is just about to run out, the lens is probably about 8 years old. A private seller is hardly going to offer you a 1 year guarantee.

I paid £359 UK for mine with 1 year warranty, lens was in fantastic condition with tripod foot, original caps and original Pentax zip case for 60-250...

Make sure you get the tripod foot!
