Originally posted by sillyzippy I really REALLY want to join this club, but need some guidance. I just upgraded my K100D to a K7 and want to add some Pentax prime glass to the lineup.
I am desiring a relatively fast, lighter, walkaround lens for a more normal POV - something that will work allaround for chasing my kids, snapping the environment, and also getting some group shops (both indoor and out).
I have and love the Tamron 24-75 F2.8, but I want something smaller/lighter. I also have and love the FA50 1.4, but its a bit too long. I am thinking of these options and would like to stay within $500 US budget range (if possible)
FA35 -- probably first choice, but seems very very hard to find -- any leads?
DA40 -- I like what I see here, but I wonder if it is too close to my FA50?
DA35 macro -- seems pretty interesting, but people have widely different opinions on if good for general photography?
DA21 -- probably too wide?
Any strong opinions?
Thanks in advance,
Mike
I'll take a crack at some help. I own 3 of the 4 lenses you are considering, plus the Tamron 28-75 and FA 50/1.4 you reference. The Tamron 28-75 is my go-to lens for walkabout, but I do love my primes as well.
FA 35 is awesome, but yes, it is virtually impossible to find anymore in the US. Too bad, as it is a great lens and probably perfect for what you want, and I am sure you know its attributes. Quick AF is a plus.
DA 40 is a good walkaround lens, due to its size and weight, and excellent colors and sharpness. Yes, it is longer than the 35mm lenses, but it is noticeably more usable in my opinion as a walkaround lens than any 50mm prime. Still maybe a bit too long for a general walkaround lens, but still worth consideration. Quick AF is a plus.
DA 35 Macro is an amazing walkaround lens, but it is not at its best in "chasing kids". The AF can sometimes take a bit to lock in, so shooting kids is not its strongest point. The DA 35 excels at being able to shoot your family, then shoot a landscape shot, then walk up to a flower and/or bug and get an outstanding macro shot. Colors and sharpness are outstanding.
I don't own the DA 21, but while I presume it can work as a walkaround lens, it would be too wide for my purposes.
Hope this helps.
