Culture nice one, which Raynox and which lens did you use for that shot?
Thanks. I was shooting with the Raynox 150 with Tamron 70-300mm. If it is of any worth, at a focal length of 120mm.

The ice plant flowers are very tiny in reality. Seed packets and garden websites render deceptively larger-looking pics; I'm sure yours is an ice plant bloom: PlantFiles: Detailed information on Baby Sunrose, Dew Plant, Heartleaf Ice Plant, Heart Leaf Ice Plant Aptenia cordifolia

Can anybody explain what effect putting the focus on the lower end or on infinity have on DOF?

Fall is coming soon. Bummer, because I was starting to enjoy shooting bugs and getting the hang of it.
Here are a few shots.

That is a very good shot of a robber fly. Sometimes they have their prey in their "spear". Then you get a photo of victor and vanquished.

In very general terms, minimum focus distance provides higher magnification because it's closer, and the closer you get, the less DOF you have.

Wow. Great results from a very inexpensive combination. Looks like a good manageable magnification with that combo.

Check out Online Depth of Field Calculator

I use the calculator all the time. Really great information.

Really great work on the last 2 pages!

Just curious who uses a hood with the raynox and who doesn't? I started using a 49mm screw on hood I can't say I see a huge difference which surprised me.

The problem is that a diopter changes the effective focal length of the main lens, because the two together become a compound lens. If you can figure out the effective focal length of the compound lens, the calculator will work.

Eventually you will see a photo ruined by flare, and others with reduced contrast due to veiling flare, exactly like a regular lens. I'm a big fan of lens hoods, but there are two problems I've observed with a hood when shooting macro:
  1. A hood can block the light
  2. A hood can scare insects with its looming presence
I use a 49mm hood sometimes, but not often with insects.

There's a calculator here, which gives you the effective focal length of your combo, It also gives you the maximum magnification you can get from a combo.
for 135mm lens with DCR-150 the effective FL is 81.9mm

You get more DOF when putting the focus on infinity, and you get more magnification and less DOF when put it on MFD.

its about time this thread got moving a little. great shots mtux. the M135/3.5 is a great lens. were these shots handheld? at the moment ive only got my 55-300 to pair with the DCR-150. however im thinking in purchasing the meyer optik 135mm f2.8 (or the super tak 135/3.5) in m42 mount. im assuming i wont have any problems pairing either of those with the raynox right?
