K5 with FA 77 and a Marumi +5 diopter close-up lens (not a true Raynox, but I thought it was close enough for this thread...)

f2.4

f2.8 (I think)

Joining the Raynox Macro Club

After reading a lot on the Raynox DCR-150, I ordered one on line last week. I should receive it by end of this week or sometime next week. So far, I've been enjoying taking close up of insects and flowers using my Tamron 70-300mm 1:2 macro mounted on a Pentax K7. Some of my photos are in My Gallery, Pentax SLR Talk Forum. See you soon.

The photos on this thread helped me decide to buy a Raynox DCR-150. I got it a few weeks back and have been experimenting using it with my other lenses. It works very well with the kit lens as well as the Pentax 55-300mm, which is what I used for this shot:

It's going to be fun getting back into close-up shooting after some 25 years away from it. Thanks to everyone who posted pictures using the Raynox for your inspiration!

Nice shot, Tamia. I did some test shots today and found it almost impossible to get a decent photo. The working distance (8") is too short for shooting insects and the depth of field is too shallow. I am thinking of getting a slider (rail) but working with a tripod is not easy easy either. I guess I'll have to practise more. Regards.

Hey people
Have been thinking about mounting one of these to my DFA100 WR - anyone else tried it? (I see the spider above!)

I also notice that its for threads 52mm and up, whereas guess how many of my Pentax lenses (100 Macro included) have 49mm threads?!!

Seems as if you could try a step-up adapter ring. They're cheap and light, and screw into the filter threads of your lens (or the filter on your lens). Has anyone tried doing this?

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.
What have you all done?
What monster have you released?

I am a man on a budget and was hoping to get an old macro lens, but to get one that is any good still costs a bit doesn't it?

Then I came across this thread........ I have now taken the plunge...... These Raynox are just so much fun.
I have only had it a day (and only had time for a dozen quick shots) and today all I can think of is playing with my new toy.

Nothing else.

Seriously though, thanks for all your information, it encouraged me to get this.
I am so glad I did.

Hello Jay,

I've got the D FA 100mm Macro lens as well and just bought the Raynox DCR-250. The Raynox won't fit the lens unless you buy a step-down ring (49mm-43mm). The Raynox has a 43mm thread.

Regards,

Martin

You need a step-down ring to adapt a smaller filter (Raynox/43mm thread) on a larger lens (D FA Macro 100mm/49mm thread). I haven't tried a step-down ring yet (ordered it on Thursday, though) but using a step-down ring makes more sense to me than the other way around.

Regards,

Martin

A Step-up ring is needed for the Raynox' Clip-on adapter to work.

JayR has a 49mm lens and if he wants to use the Raynox, which clamps to a 52mm lens minimum, he needs to step up to a larger filter diameter. So if you use an adapter that goes from a smaller to a larger filter size, that's a step-up adapter ring. At least that's how I understand it.

There are two ways to mount a raynox closeup lens on a lens with smaller than 52mm threads:

1) remove the raynox from its clip-on adapter and use a lens.filter.thread -> 43mm step down ring
2) if lens filter thread is smaller than 52mm and you want to use the raynox clip-on, a lens.filter.thread->52mm set-up adapter will work.
etc...

step up or down is with respect to the main lens filter threads. Like a 43mm raynox is a step-down from a 49mm main lens. The adapter's male threads enter the main lens.

I can clamp the DCR-150 to a 49mm lens OK. It's a little tight, but it works.
