Nice looking spider shot even if he does look like he's about to jump in my face and I'm outta here!!! LOL I hate spiders but I'm not opposed to shooting if my lens is long enough I don't have them in my face.

Raynox 150

Thank you! Taken with the humble little Pentax K-r, the DA 55-300, and a Raynox 150 attached to the end.

Could you resize your photo? It's really too big for the standard size allowed in Pentax Forums.

Sure. The upload was 2000 x 1378 pixels and just under 2 megabytes, uploaded to the user gallery. Then I linked that photo to here. Is there a better way? I was just trying to save having to resize/upload the same pic twice.

I'm surprised the forum didn't change that for you. Usually it is resized for you. This is why I use flickr. You have a drop down to chose different sizes. Forum rules says photos uploaded and posted shouldn't make a member have to scroll to see the photo, either vertically or horizontally. And preferrable largest size is 1280x1024. I'm afraid you're going to have to resize it, unless you create a flickr account.

if you're going to have to buy both a lens and the raynox, then you're better off buying a used 50mm prime and some tubes (or a manual macro lens).

this one is really cheap :
SMC PENTAX-M 1:1.7 50mm Prime Lens - Very Fast & Sharp Lens with Great Bokeh | eBay

also read this if you havent read it.gave me great info when i first started out

if you give us a budget then we might be able to provide you with the best option

How much magnification are you looking for? The longer the focal length of the base lens, the greater the magnification when you add a diopter. To get 1:1 magnification with the Raynox 250, you want to get close to 100mm focal length. Lens speed doesn't matter but you want minimal aberrations because a diopter will magnify them. Cheapest primes are the standard 28-50-135mm focal lengths that everyone had in their kit in the old days. I would choose a lens with A contacts. Manual exposure slows you down, not ideal for insects. My favourite combo for a light but powerful kit is an A 135mm lens with Raynox 150. The DCR 250 has more powerful magnification but is more difficult to handle and much tighter subject distances.

There are a few reasons to prefer a Raynox over extension tubes:
1. Auto exposure with A lenses. Tubes with auto exposure contacts are uncommon and can be pricey
2. Diopter mounts without removing the lens
3. No light loss

You can see some IQ deterioration with a Raynox if you study the photo at 100% crop, but otherwise it looks no different than the lens on its own. I have a D FA 100mm macro, TC, extension tube and various rings to reverse mount a single lens or stack two lenses. My first choice is easily the dedicated macro lens, but second choice is a Raynox diopter for its good IQ. flexibility, small size and ease of use.

im aware that the raynox is the second most preferable option after a macro lens which is the reason i own one as well. i was just giving some alternatives since according to another post in another thread, the op's funds are limited, otherwise i would have suggested either a macro lens or the 55-300 with the dcr-150. his only lens is the 18-135 which apparently produces vignetting with both diopters.

Yes, at least the dcr-150 vignettes a bit even at infinity and 135mm. More if you zoom out or move away from infinity.
