My FA 50mm f1.4 is 230 grams and the A 50mm f1.2 is 345 grams. I have an M 50mm f1.4 that is 235 grams and M 50mm f1.7 that is 190 grams.

Should I stay or should I go???

So here I am again.
Last week I bought DA*55 to replace my Ks 50/1.2 & 55/1.8. So far I have been happy with this lens, and it's usability leaps over that of Ks. My keeper ratio due to OOF is much better, and when it drizzles I'm fully confident in my now finally fully WRed combo.
BUT
... yesterday I finally had gotten some chance to have a go on some of my shots from my May holiday back home, and seeing those my heart sank
Do I really want to sell lens that renders this magic?

Peter ... I really don't know why you are selling such a magic lens (other than recouping costs) ... if you can keep producing results like that ... there's no way I'd be parting with an awesome lens.

thanks Simon!
that's exactly what popped into my head while editing those pics:
Here is the "equation":
DA* - AF, WR, AE, (all in all perfect street lens, bring a lot of keepers, sharp and contrasty at f1.4)
K - IQ, OOF (this lens renders magic, and it's OOF is just BETTER than that of DA*55)

I missed a lot of shots due to my MF skills and f1.2 combo but those I got are superb! I have to say that optically K50/1.2 is right up there with FAltds if not higher!

So... IQ or practical usability????
That's the question....

Since you like the 55mm focal length, Why not get the Cosina 55/1.2 and you'll have your cake? 2 out of 3 (focal length, aperture = 2)

Peter it looks like you have a good reason to keep both the K50/1.2 and the DA55/1.4!!
That would be my suggestion; I have numerous lenses in the 50-55mm FL range and use all of them. Some are better for certain conditions than others, the same scenario as yourself.

Phil.

this is true Phil,
I would love to keep both but my budget doesn't allow me to do so, and then if I'm going somewhere I don't want to be lugging around a ton of lenses (and bag with 10-20, 31, 43, 50/1.2, 55/1.4, 85/2 would come dangerously close to a ton! ).
after few days with the DA* I'm still at the square one on whether to keep it or not.... I have until wednesday to decide
All in all it's a great lens and if I'd never had 50/1.2 I'd be more than happy with it, but the OOF just can't match that of 50/1.2.....
decisions, decisions, decisions

I'm kind of sucker for Pentax labeled glass! The only reason why I'm keeping 10-20 is that Pentax doesn't have one that wide and if it had it would be super pricey!

oh?....what caused this change of heart? Is the K 50mm f/1.2 THAT good? I wouldn't be surprised.

I have seen the K 50mm f/1.2 beat the pants of the zeiss planar 50mm f/1.4 even at f/4 - in terms of corner sharpness.

......
indeed it is.
I mean the DA* is shaper and more contrasty but OOF rendering is pretty much incomparable, and since K responds well to sharpening, is well cropable etc....
anyway I came to conclusion that the DA* is not worth £500 price tag.
You can make your own conclusions:

"from the DA* club thread"
It was a tough one.
The DA* has tad better sharpness wide open and better contrast, but the K has better bokeh all the way from 1.2 to 5.6. It seems that guys at Pentax went bit over the top with corrections with the DA*55 and as results the OOF rendering suffers quite a bit IMO.

To show what I mean a quick set of pics:

DA* @1.4

K50/1.2 @1.2

K20/1.2 @1.4

These are 100% crops.
The figurine on the right side was the focusing point.
Please notice the highlight circles on the left and the part of the figurine right above the focus point. On both f stops the "old lady" wins IMO...
