"50mm is not a portrait lens but that doesn't mean you can't shoot portraits with it"?

This guy seems pretty ignorant. The (very small) differences in his examples are down to the pose of the subject & way he shot the photos, not down to the lenses used. The tighter the shot the longer the lens you'll need, yes, but 50mm is fine for head and shoulders such as these.

50's are good for almost anything -be it on our cropped sensor- I have proven this to myself years ago, back when I had K100Ds, I had only one lens for months: SMC M 50mm f/1.4 yet that time probably is my most photo-productive months, thousands of images, from families to flowers, cats to butterflies, indoors to landscapes.

When you had only one lens, you will truly know what it is capable of

I've experienced hundreds of lenses with focal lengths ranging from 10mm to 600mm but in the end I find the 50mm stays most of the time on the camera. Well to have real 50mm on the crop body I should have the 35mm on but by some strange reason it's the 50mm anyway. The flamboyant below is shot with a Pentax A50/1.2 on a K10D body.

This is absolute crap, particularly his misunderstanding of the effects of a crop sensor. Perspective distortion is caused by distance to subject and viewing angle. On a full-frame sensor, you have to get closer than with an aps-c sensor to get a tight crop, causing more distortion with a 50mm lens than with an 85mm lens. On my K-5, I use 50mm a lot for portraits. I also use my Sigma 30 f/1.4 for portraits. If it's waist-up or wider, the distortion is not evident.

That said, my favorite portrait lens is the 77 limited, even on crop sensor.

Shot in somewhat poor lighting, so apologies for the noise.
