I wasn't aware the HD 1.4x would work with long lenses. My older teleconverter doesn't, and I thought the only ones available were the rear L 2x and L 1.4x.

I now might be interested in the HD 1.4x. How do you like it?

The older short 2x and 1.4x work on long lenses but the long version put the front element up inside the lens closer to the rear element of the lens improving the image quality. The HD DA teleconverter used on my K-3 does a great job with my fa* 300 but I can't compare it with the long type since I don't have access to one and I'm not sure those fit any lens I own.

I've only used the "L" TCs on old screw-mount & K series lenses (500/4.5 and 1000/8)--for which, I assume, they were intended--and they worked pretty well. They aren't compatible with (and could damage) more modern lens where the rear element isn't sufficiently recessed. But sure, TCs are an essential for die-hard wildlife photographers.

I'd been using a Tamron PZ 1.4x with my long lenses with good results but switched to the HD when it came out, figuring the improved coatings were worth it Truth to tell, I can't really say I've noticed any distinct improvement in IQ but that's partly because I haven't really looked for it. All I can say is that I'm pretty happy with the samples I posted above. Was it due to the HD TC? There are just too many intervening variables--including my inconsistent technique and PP--for me to make that claim.

The L converters came with the A* series of lenses and share their design (grey rather than black as the S converters). They fit a couple of older and newer long lenses as well; a list is here: Rear Converter-A 2x-L Reviews - Pentax K-mount Teleconverters and Adapters - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database.

Very nice. Good lighting too. I think this lens gives the new DFA 70-200 a run for its money.
