Originally posted by builttospill I wasn't aware the HD 1.4x would work with long lenses. My older teleconverter doesn't, and I thought the only ones available were the rear L 2x and L 1.4x.
I now might be interested in the HD 1.4x. How do you like it?
I've only used the "L" TCs on old screw-mount & K series lenses (500/4.5 and 1000/8)--for which, I assume, they were intended--and they worked pretty well. They aren't compatible with (and could damage) more modern lens where the rear element isn't sufficiently recessed. But sure, TCs are an essential for die-hard wildlife photographers.
I'd been using a Tamron PZ 1.4x with my long lenses with good results but switched to the HD when it came out, figuring the improved coatings were worth it Truth to tell, I can't really say I've noticed any distinct improvement in IQ but that's partly because I haven't really looked for it. All I can say is that I'm pretty happy with the samples I posted above. Was it due to the HD TC? There are just too many intervening variables--including my inconsistent technique and PP--for me to make that claim.
