Well you can start modest and buy the Macro-Elmarit 60/2.8 from me!

It is a great lens (do some research on it) but I don't find I use the FL much.

Alternatively, I can suggest the 90/2. Mine meters perfectly in Av mode (which makes it a bit easier to use) and is of course a brilliant lens with the creamiest bokeh you can find.

If you are after wide and are awash with cash, go for the 35/1.4 or the 19/2.8. Both brilliant (only tried the former :..( ). Then there is the 100/2.8 macro which many claim is the best macro lens ever.

Of course none of them are going to make us into great photographers, but we can pretend

OK, I'm tempted. Tempt me further...

The Leitax solution seems almost rational when I consider that I have one big foot in the alpha-mount map, still aiming for a Sony FF camera, but my newest and coolest tool is a Pentax K-7. Whichever system I wind up with in a few years, the Leica Rs would be easy to reconvert to use on either mount. I have the kit lens (very nice!) and some 50 and 135 Taks. My first wish would be for a long prime or telezoom.

Has anyone used the Leica Rs or Contax Zeiss in the range of 70-300mm, primes or zooms? What's your verdict?

I've used the Summicron-R 90/2 and though I haven't compared them side by side, my guess is that our A*85/1.4 is better. Summicron is cheaper though, more compact and is a very nice lens with beautiful bokeh.

yes. Few primes and one zoom. I decided to keep Summicron 90, Zeiss Sonnar 135 and Vario Elmar 80-200/4.
Summicron 90 is great portrait lens with creamy bokeh - not so sharp (eg. as Voigtlander 90 or Vivitar S1 90), but sharp enough.
Zeiss Sonnar 135 is the best 135mm I've ever tested. Perfect lens. Much better than Elmarit 135.
Vario Elmar 80-200/4 - amazing quality - it is prime quality in zoom body. I tasted it against primes and at f4 it is sharp as other Leica primes at f4 - Summicron 90, Elmarit 135, Elmarit 180.
Elmarit 180 - great tele lens. Better than Pentax K 200/2.5. I sold it and miss it.

I'm a Leica virgin and need help entering the fray please. I have found a banged up elmarit 60mm macro for $350 and a summicron 90mm for $500. The 60mm has a badly damaged filter thread but optically is ok. I doubt that you would be able to use a hood or filters with it. The 90mm seems better value compared to current prices but I would probably get more use from a macro. The pictures in this thread from the 90mm look very nice, is the 60mm far behind?

Any comments would be much appreciated.

You do not need additional hood or filter for elmarit 60. Front glass is deep inside lens like in FA 100/2.8 macro, so in fact hood is not needed here. I've never used any kind of filter with this lens - no need to secure front glass.

elmarit 60 vs. summicron 90 - these are different lenses. 50% focal length is one, second is that summicron has "creamy" bokeh. Even if I never tested it I'm sure that Elmarit is sharper, especially at f2.8.

Leica Telyt 560 f 6.8 just been added to my collection but it's not a straight forward conversion as there are cams that interfere with the Leitax adapter so a bit of dremelling is in order. It also has the push/ pull focus. Watch this space as the conversion procedes.

from my experince it is better than Sigma 300/2.8 with AF1.7X converter - from optical perspective. What I don't like is manual push/pull focus.

Piotr, your pics with the lens fuelled my LBA and lust for the lens. I'm sure I'll adapt to the push pull focus, perhaps enhancing it with my feet.
