Nice shots Alwyn - especially #4 of the canal for me.

Olympic Stadium - is that where Ajax play their football matches ? If so I was there many years ago, around 1983, to watch Ajax vs. Feyenoord (when they were the top two teams) !

Thanks for your reply frogfish. Ajax played around 1983 still in the "De Meer" stadium. Later on, around 1995 they moved their home-matches to the newly build "Arena". The Olympic stadium was build for the Olympic Games of 1928. So it is another stadium than Ajax's. It is hardly used for professional matches anymore, athletics clubs use it as a training ground instead.

Very nice--were these also done with a filter attached to the lens' front? If so, can you tell us more about the IR filter? Tx

JT
Thank you for your reply. Yes, it was done with a filter to the lens front. It is a 720 nm lens. Light with a wavelentgh bigger than 720 nm passes the filter. This should according to the sellers website leave some room for some colour information to pass the filter. In practise however I found it easiest to make a plain black & white photo of the red coloured infrared photo. Website of the seller with a photo still containing some colour information: IR 720 filter 72mm - 3600-720-72 - FotoShop Aalten - FotoShop Aalten - De specialist in.

undecided

hello guys,

I really like the pictures you have posted here. I'm in the process of getting a wide lens and this sigma and the 15mm limited are the ones that are on my budget so, do you have any comments to help me decide?

Thanks!

Hi Veronica,

I did own both lenses but I kept my Sigma 10-20 and sold my DA15. For the life of me I just don't understand people's obsession with that lens. The DA 16-45 has all the IQ of the DA15 at half the price. The Sigma 10-20 is so much more versatile - it was no contest and an easy decision.

If you are not hung up on brand names and prime lenses and if all you want is the best possible lens with the best possible IQ at the best possible price, you'll look beyond Pentax. The Sigma 10-20 vs. any ultra wide lens by Pentax is a no brainer. Moreover Sigma, like Tamron backs up their lenses with a much better warranty.

Thanks for your reply John,

May I ask where did you buy your lens? If you buy in the US will you have warranty on Canada?

Hi Veronica"

I bought mine @ Abes of Maine--had the best price at the time. I do not know how Sigma handles warranties out of the States, but you can check their website for help. You may have to e-mail them on the question, unless a kind Canadian steps in here, with some answers. I'm sure there are Canadian owners of the Sigma 10-20mm who visit this thread. Good luck

I buy all my lenses in Canada, mostly from Prodigital. However since they don't carry Sigma I bought the 10-20 and 17-70 from London Drugs. The 10-20 came with a 10 year manufactures warranty. Never looked into buying camera gear from the USA.

I recently loaned my 10-20 to my boss for a weekend. He bought one the following day. Most people who have this lens will tell you it is their most used lens.

Hi Veronica,

Whilst I don't have the 15 Ltd, what I can say is that the difference in FoV from 10 - 15mm is HUGE, in fact the difference between 10mm and 12mm (from the Pentax 12-24) is also a lot.

As you can see from this thread the sharpness in the 10-20, even at 10mm, is excellent. As with all UWA lenses you may need to correct shots taken at UWA with a program like PTLens (free) and so always shoot a little outside of your ideal framing so allow for loss during correction.

If you want wide then, IMO, it's a no-brainer, the Sigma 10-20, Tamron 10-24 or Pentax 12-24 all give you sharpness and flexibility the 15mm doesn't offer.

Keep in mind those prices don't include shipping to Canada which is more than what most people might imagine. I paid $750 for my 10-20 and $650 for my DA15, so yeah we Canadians don't get the best deals, but I'm not so sure products sold on the American market are backed up with the same warranty.

Broadway Camera in Vancouver has the Sigma 10-20 on for $599 - I know you're in Alberta and what that means - however the point is shop around. Quite often one place will match the price of another.

No matter what you pay for the lens, I'm certain you will like a lot. To be honest I was shopping for the DA21 Ltd at the time when I bought my 10-20. As it turned out the 10-20 was only $100 more than the DA21. After mounting one onto my Kx and looking through the viewfinder, I simply had to have that lens, no matter what the price.

Are there no quality used lenses on-line retailers in Canada ? The 10-20 is a sought after lense but they must come up often since there are quite a few out there. Somewhere like KEH with a reputation to match ? And offering a guarantee ?

That is a HUGE point in itself. I haven't bothered to learn how to post images here but I have a sample shot taken at 10mm and 14mm. The shot taken at 14mm appears to be twice as close as the shot taken at 10mm. Every mm at the short end is like 100mm at the long end. So think of it this way... if you were to consider purchasing a Sigma 150-500mm lens, would make even the least bit of sense to compare it to the D-FA100mm? Of course not! That's the kind of difference 5mm makes between 10 and 15mm. And we haven't even discussed the range between 15-20mm.

Now if you still think the Sigma 10-20 is too much money, compare it to the cost of the DA15. Don't forget to add 8 years of extended warranty to the price of the DA15 because it only comes with a 2 year warranty vs. 10 years for the 10-20.
