Just bought my sigma and took it for the first quick field test. It does not look perfect, but it's very hard to find a shop that has more than one copy on site. Also, it's my first UWA lense so I'm not sure if I can get anything better at 10mm...

Wonderful image, great composition. I have recently bought one of these lenses and this angle is on my list of things to try.

I photograph a lot of non-profit events, fund raisers and occasionally a magazine piece in conjunction with my social activist writer friend. My workhorse combo is my K-3ii w/ 16mm to 85mm lens with the K70 wearing something complimentary, usually the 55mm-300mm PLM WR. One day last summer I decided to go downtown with just my #2 camera, the K70, and my least used lens, the Sigma 10mm-20mm f3.5. I just got downtown when I got a call from my friend. There was a Moms Demand Action March in the West End. She was gonna LIVEcast it on her Take It From Tara page and I said I’d meet her there.

There was an art display, a big cook out and lot of community going on. There were 200 people with their cell phones out and five professional looking shooters dripping Nikons. I figured “stock” shots of righteously and rightfully angry Mothers and kids marching in protest would be taken by the thousands and I took my share while looking for scenes I could exploit with the benefits of UWA POV like the sign on the table and the orange shirted protesters in the background. (For reasons I don’t understand my friend prefers photos cropped square for her social media posts.)

Then while wandering around I saw a woman giving a massage to another woman and asked to photograph their hands. I was reluctant to get too into their personal space and got the top photo. When I got home I decided to see if I could make something more of that photo. After extensive cropping and ‘shopping I ended up with just the hands and I was amazed at how much detail was retained. The Sigma 10mm-20mm really impressed me. This photo is one of my most liked and when I say it was taken at an anti-gun violence rally people surmise there is a much more poignant story of comforting being depicted than just a massage.

Snowking's Winter Festival, 2019, Yellowknife, NT. This is the snow castle where many of the events were to be held, built on the frozen surface of Great Slave Lake. Temperatures at the time of our visit (third week in March) were record-breakingly warm (daytime highs well above feezing for most of the week we were there) and the castle was shut down during the day due to flooding of some of the rooms. The festival was closed a week earlier than usual due to the heat wave. This was the first time in the festival's 24 year history that this had happened. A taste of things to come for the Arctic as things get hotter. Weird to think these images will likely represent a bygone past of winter snows in just a few decades time...
