I just bought the f/3.5 version of this lens - looking forward to it arriving so I can try it out. It's a used copy and doesn't look like it'll include the hood - can anyone comment on the need for a hood for the lens? I know it's a super-wide and therefore I would expect it to be beneficial, but the hood is very shallow and I'm not sure how effective it will be.

Thanks

I have the older F:4 - F:5.6 version and it came with a hood and I've used it both with and without the hood. I found the hood fine at a zoom range between 12-20 mm but caused some minor vignetting @ 10mm in moderate to low natural light but vignetting at all zoom ranges except 20mm when using a version 1 or version 2 Pentax AFG360 flash

If you choose to purchase a hood for the lens here are some dimensions from my original hood
The filter ring on the lens is 77mm
The Original Hood inside Diameter between the petals is approx. 89mm. The Top & Bottom Petals are 27mm deep and the side petals are 10mm deep

Hope this info helps

A lens that I use too little, in most cases indoor.

The F3.5 version has a 82mm filter diameter, though.
Can't answer the necessity of the hood though, I used that lens too little yet.

It's arrived and as I suspected, without a hood. I think it had been priced down as they reported chipped glass, but the photos clearly showed that the lens had a clear filter on it, so I guessed that the chips would be on the filter, not the lens itself. I was right and the lens is optically very clear. There are some marks on the filter though I'm not sure they're chips - I need to give it a clean later to see. I don't usually use protective filters but it's a Hoya Pro 1 UV filter so should be of decent quality and with no hood there's nothing to protect the front from bumps.

FWIW, hoods are less than $25 shipped from Amazon

You might want to check if your filter introduces vignetting at shorter focal lengths.

As with many things and almost anything photographic, they're much cheaper in the US than in Europe.

Yes, probably worth checking - a review I read states that the edges get over two stops less light than the centre even without filters.

Some photos with my sigma 10-20 f3.5, the first three with Pentax k3II and the last three with Pentax KS2.
Love these shots - well done!

Working with my Sigma 10-20 with a Jessop's 13mmextension tube with A contacts. Not a combination for pixel peeping! I'm wondering if my 16-85 might give better results?

Unsurprisingly, I get better results in controlled situations indoors...

...than handheld shooting outdoors.

Zoom is set for 20mm or just a little less. Any shorter and the point of focus is located within the lens itself. (This is a great way to discover just how much dust there is on the interior elements of your lens!) Front element is almost touching the subject; not all subjects tolerate this.

Cross posted from "Macro by any means necessary."

That's a strong subject that works well in B&W. I'm sure the colour version is just as good, perhaps you could put it in the lens club?

To my surprise, I prefer the b&w version. I think the colors are a distraction of the form in this version. A nice image all the same.

Yes, he occupies the corner just right and creates a leading line to the balloon leaning away from him.
