What is the difference between a cheap and or gimmicky trick and any other kind of trick if it does what you want?

I am intrigued whether setting a custom white balance to match the filter on the K-5 would work well.
this should give you an idea of the kind of colour casts to expect:

this image was taken with my camera's white balance fixed at 5000K

I'm only interested in the tricks that take something away from an image, for me photography is a process of subtraction...not addition - for instance would this image have been anywhere near as effective if the clouds were sharply rendered? in my opinion, no. Having the clouds blurred, and the direction of that blur takes the focus away from the clouds themselves and it leads the eye to the buildings and the streets.

bickrs, adding to what Digitalis has shown, I've posted earlier in this thread showing the colour cast of the B+W 10 stop ND filter.

Just saw this in the news section of the "the other" forum.

Tokina Kenko viariable ND from 1.3 to 10 stops

Kenko-Tokina launches NDX variable neutral density filter: Digital Photography Review

I bet would be just as rediculously expensive as the singh ray version

and those are only going to be made in 77mm and 82mm filter sizes - a bit too big for the 49mm thread of the DA15.

I haven't seen them to be honest,The darkest ND filter they make is an ND8 which cuts light down by 3stops - which is nowhere near as dark as the hoya NDX400 - which is about 8.25 stops.
