Haha like Steve said. They have other things to worry about. When you try to pick them up the males kick you away as if you are a competitor.
This photo is from 18cm distance from my sensor. That is around 10cm from the lens I think.
I bought this lens for shots like this.
With the short focussing distance it makes my DA35 Ltd useless (also because I have the DFA 100 WR).

At first glance before reading the text I thought they were "Cane Toads" (most hated pest in Australia). They are an introduced species which are poisonous and are killing many local species of frogs, birds and mammals.
You are welcome anytime to come over and "nail" plenty of those for us.... preferably with a nail gun.
Haha yeah I know about them. These are common toads, because they are common in England.
They are smaller, but I saw a very big one in Montenegro (Mediterranean Europe).
