When I am out shooting and I know I have a high dynamic range situation, I capture 5 images with my K3/K5 II (just three with the K-01) spaced 1.5 EVs apart. When I get it into lightroom, I usually play with the exposure slider on a couple of the images to see if I can get what I need out of a single image. If I can, then that's what I do. Otherwise, I export the five images (without processing) to Photomatix Pro, click on the natural exposure blend and then click save which takes the image back to Lightroom. What I then have is a single image with a more compressed dynamic range and that's where I will drop on a GND in Lightroom or bump shadows, etc.

Here is an image (sorry, it is a DA *55 image) processed three different ways -- mainly to show differences between the different tools.

This is done with Color Efex using a single K-01 image.

Photomatix using three images.

HDR Efex using three images.

Looking at these image, I don't feel that running the images through an HDR program adds anything to the end result. If I had shot at iso 100 on the single image, it certainly would have been enough, but it was hand held, so not so good maybe. Anyway, I hope that is helpful. These are tools and you just try to get where you can achieve your vision.

Sorry for the rabbit trail. I'm not an expert, just like photography, that's all.
Nice comparison. I actually do like the single shot Color Efex version. Has real pop to it. I agree that handheld isn't really the way to go for these kinds of shots.

The "problem" I see on the first one is the overexposed area on the right side. I guess histogram would confirm it? For my eyes is the rendering of colours in this zone more nice on the 2nd one. But it's only me.

The problem is that the photos don't have enough depth of field. The trees in the background are out of focus, but the different programs still try to pull detail out of those areas. I should probably have burned those areas just a little in lightroom after the fact, as that would have helped.

I think you're probably right. It certainly has the least amount of noise of the three if you pixel peep. If you print the photos at a similar size, you probably would get pretty similar results.

If I had stopped down more, shot on a tripod at iso 100, the photo would have turned out better anyway, so that's on me.
You provided a nice visual anyway. I basically use the same process. I often shoot bracketed sequences just in case I need HDR, but more often than not I've been surprised that my images are adequate anyway. I've also taken opportunities when I've had the tripod to make up the difference in DR by shooting at lower ISO to more success than processing the HDR. I often shoot HDR handheld specifically because I'm unable to use a tripod at the time.

Waiting at anchor off Belle Isle, near Detroit Michigan. I had a polarizer on, but if you pixel peep, you may notice some fuzziness, which I'm pretty sure is down to the polarizer.

I like that road shot there. I notice you have the road essentially centered, but the trees shift the balance and make for a fantastic composition.

I like this quite a bit - great work, LeRolls.

Here's my first post on this thread after following it for a few years. Finally got my hands on this lens.

Perhaps a bit over-processed for many, but I went with it.

Thanks! Much appreciated!

I don't think your image is over-cooked (pun intended). Quite dramatic actually!

After all theses winter shoots, something different, something from India, my last november trip.

This is another Jain temple I visited, a small one with almost nobody here. Still this is lovely if you ask me and there some serenity. As usual, you can click on picture to see bigger version (up to native).

This is cross posted in DA ltds thread:https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/122-lens-clubs/74194-da-limited-club-250.html#3740. Still the pictures are obviously not the same. Hope you like them
